Let the brewing commence!

After reading this thread, I decided to jug the water from the tap this time instead of using the garden hose

Image
Using CRS for the first time as per Graham's calculator for a Porter, as well as 1/2 a Campden tablet.

Image
All the lovely grains joining the strike water- quite a bit of clumping which I've not experienced before, but then I've not used chocolate or black malt before!

Image
And the mash tun put to bed for an hour and a half!

More later...

Sounds intriguing, i'll be keeping an eye on this one to see how it turns out. Im sure somebody will mention the fat from the coconut killing head retention but in my experience thats overstated, i suppose if it was an issue you could add some wheat to the grist.
Anyway good luck with it and don't forget to tell us what the boil smells like and what the hydrometer reading tastes like.

I did consider putting some torrified Wheat into the mix- if it pours as flat as a pancake them will add some next time (if it's worth repeating!)

The boil doesn't smell overly different to any other brew...

Cheers,
Jamie

All is not going as smoothly as it could...

Whilst heating the sparge water in the boiler I noticed a leak form one of the elements, no bigie- I simply placed some PTFE tape round the threads and screwed back together again!

The runnings from the first batch sparge were painfully slow, must have been nearly an hour. luckily the second was much quicker.

Image
lovely dark wort.

Image
Spent grains.

Image
In goes the coconut to the first runnings.

Image
A nice roaring boil... eventually! The element with the leak decided to pack up so the one remaining element had a lot of work to do to get up to the boil!

The brewday continues...

A weird skin forming on the wort...

Image
...due to the aforementioned fat in the coconut???

Looks intresting JabbA, you can also a bit of malibu to the keg, bottle or glass if there is not enough coconut

There's an idea  Would have to get SWMBO to get a bottle though, don't want to be seen buying it :D

Cheers,
Jamie

Nearly done...

Image
On goes the chiller and the end of boil hops

Image
In it all goes into the FV, looked a bit tight with 24l collected...

Image
In goes the yeast.

Image
Done! After stirring in the yeast I decided to run off 4l or so in to a DJ- don't want to come back from a weeks holiday with a great big black, coconutty mess under the stairs!

Finished up with a SG of 1.050 which I'm pleased with. Having downed the contents of the trial jar it's obviously very sweet but there is a definite hint of coconut there (I think!), I've not got the greatest pallet! hopefully it'll still come through when the bottles are ready.

Image
And here's one I made eailer! A Dark Ruby, not overly pleased with this one, definitely has potential (messed up the sparge, oh and decided to miss out on the priming sugars- mistake!) - will have to give it another try.

All in all a good brew day, Cheers!
