Been wanting to do a Riggwelter for ages now. So as my latest BB order has arrived got the following mashing now:
As a result of doing a 19 hour night shift last night I forgott to pre heat the mash tun!

subsequently missing my mash temp

So I decided to pull a decoction to get it up to temp! Bit nerve racking but hit 66 deg C and holding
More info and pics to follow!

Well, got everything finished last night. Longest brewday yet @ 8 hours

rather than the normal 5 ish! Oh well. Managed to get sat down after and within 10 mins I was snoring into a Brakspear Triple

It is busy bubbling away the air lock this morning so all in all well happy, even if a bit knackered! Managed 20L @ 1.062 OG expected abv of 6.3 so my efficiency is up abit @ 77.2% as I was aiming for 20L @ 1.058 expected ABV of 5.7% :thumb:
Here are the photo's

Supplies! The sacks came from a bulk purchase with some lads from JBKF, straight from Fawcett's, all others from Paul @ BB

I know there has been some debate over the 1g of roasted barley but I thought I'd put it in for shits and giggles as I had a kilo of the stuff!

So this is the 1.5L decoction I pulled after not paying enough attention and putting my strike water into a cold mash tun!

Coming to a boil, one handed stiring and camera opperation! not bad on zero sleep

The resulting mash temp!

:thumb:

Collecting and recirculation first runnings! The mash took a lot longer than normal

not sure why but i'll put it down to sleepiness

Collection

FWH (really need to get a digital set of scales!)
UK Progress 5.6 % 27 g
UK Fuggle 4.5 % 23 g
German Northern Brewer 10.5 % 18 g

only collected 25L, was expecting closer to 28L but it turned out fine so I'm going to do some fine tuning of my loss calcs!

75mins into the boil IC in, 1 protofloc tab in, and UK Golding 4.8 % 10g in.

Stirring during the cool!

Not feeling the freshest I've ever been but loving the first sample of Gob Hoblin from my new corni setup!

spot on!

After 30 mins rest to let the filth settle out!

1.061 @ 25 deg C = 1.062 @ 20 deg C so if the yeast does it's job down to the predicted 1.015 it should be 6.3%

Put to bed with 11g of SafAle 04
Riggwelter..................Done!

I've done the Riggwelter as detailed in GW's book twice and can safely say that both have been my best brews overall. Indeed, the first time I did it I dropped the wort straight onto the slurry left from a 5% Summer Lightning and got a fabulous 6.7% brew, tasted sublime. I usually prefer light coloured ales but have to say that I would take the Riggwelter over any other brew now and I'll certainly be brewing more.

The gramme of roasted barley isnt in Wheelers recipe book, where did you hear about using it?
I might try this at the weekend as ive got 2 FVs on the go that i can pitch onto the slurry.
Parva did you use the roast barley in yours?

I didn't no, I just used the recipe as per GW's book which doesn't have that ingredient in it.

That looks awesome
Might do that for a winter brew - nice and warming
Quick question - why are there hops in the vessel before going into the boiler ?

I imagine they are blissfully unaware Garth. Although I am only keeping hold of it untill the dray pick it up. They have been being reminded about it for the past 5 years while it's been sat in the cellar! Although its a long way to come for one ferkin!

thanks Nermal! They are the First Wort Hops (FWH). A fair few people on here use this method. I believe (although I am happy to be corrected) that adding some or all of your 90 (or 60 depending on your method) boil hops as FWH gives a more complex hop profile in your finished beer. Like I said, I'm happy to be corrected but it seems to work for me!

Well I have the first sample of this last night. Don't usually wait 25 days but with work and illness it kinda got left in the corner and forgotten about

. By heck was it worth the wait. I'll be putting the gelatin fining's in tomorrow and then into a corni on Saturday. Not taken an FV yet as my trial jar broke. New one should arrive tomorrow so an excuse for another sample (I'm on another of the deadly 19hr night shifts tonight so it will be well deserved!

) It tastes pretty spot on. Lovely coffee notes and a finish that is a little sweeter than the real thing, although that's not a bad thing in my book. All in all very very happy with it so far.

kegged and bottled mine on monday night, and that gravity kept on coming down.
OG was 1058, FG was 1006, so a tad higher than I expected/wanted, but a 7% brew should not be treated as a session beer and will last that bit longer!
Nice flavours coming out already from the dregs sample I had.
Used Nottingham yeast for the first time here, and although its done the job, there were loads of floaties around the FV and some made it into the keg. May use secondary ferment bin next time to clear that if that's Notinghams trait.
