Strong Ale

Post by tatlock » Wed Sep 09, 2009 3:19 pm

Just brewed this one up this morning and it went very well - The new Hop and Grape Mash Tun worked like a dream!

2 Gallon Batch

3 kg Marris Otter
300g Crystal
150g Roast Barley
20g Northern Brewer - 10.9%
Whirlfloc Tablet for last 20 Mins
Nottingham Packet Yeast.
Lidl Shepley Spring Water

Mashed for 90 Mins at 67 degrees in 2 gallons of water.
Sparged with 2 gallons at 78 degrees
Collected 3 gallons at 1053.
Boiled down to 2 gallons at 1078

I had to add a little water at the end to top up the volume.Apart from that though it all went perfect!

That's quite a lot of crystal for a 2 gallon batch, you may get a 'cloying' beer. The hop schedule looks on the low side too with no aroma hops and may result in a bland beer. I could be completely wrong as I've never done batches smaller than 5 gallon, hopefully it'll turn out good.

Hello,

Nearly 9% Crystal might take a while to mellow and round off, but then the OG suggests a longer maturation period of mybe 8 weeks anyway? So it'll be fine.
It looks like a stout bill with crystal and as such just bittering hops isn't surprising. Hope it turns out well. It'll have plenty of body, but should be tasty if the bitterness comes through.

Thanks for the comments Guys.
It is based around a Samuel Smiths Imperial Stout recipe in one of Graham Wheelers books.
This uses 10% crystal and 5% Roast Barley,10% sugar,Fuggles and Goldings giving 50 EBU.
Also i wasn't planning on drinking this one till at least Xmas so hopefully all will be ok.
Fingers crossed regarding the bitterness. [-o<

Just bottled this big boy into 18 London Pride bottles.
Had a little taste,(obviously!) and it is good!
Going to put this away in the garage until 2010.
Onto the next!
