Well here goes nothing. Got a horrible feeling that all my grain and mash liquor wont fit in the cool box...any suggestions?

Grain = 5.7kg
Mash = 14.3 lts!!

Oh well.this is going to be fun! :D

Yep - don't use so much water if it won't fit!

If it is too tight, then use a thicker mash ration - maybe 2:1 - so you'd need 11.4L to kick off with.....

Well it wsnt as bad as I thought but heres a quandry.

Mash liquor=14.3 lts with 5.7 kg of grain. All good managed to fit it all in
90 mins later
1st Sparge liquor=7.4lts all ok again
Collected 16.2 lts of wort

Now, the 2nd spagre liquor quantity should have been 15.3lts and I only managed to fit in 12.3lts....still ok?????

Thanks ADM but I have just left it and only done the two batches. got 27 litres in the boiler...there was probably no need for me to squeeze the last 3 litres out as it was starting to taste very dry and there wasnt much sweetness left.
Definately need some bigger equipment!!

Man it is smelling Gooooooooooood! Very dark and chocaltely, loads of coffee flavours in there.
Went for an experimental mix of 40g of Progress @ 6% and 30g Challenger @ 7.1%. The challenger smell amazing....we shall see how this turns out...

Now back to cleaning... :shock:

Cleaning!! Hmm!! :D

Do all brewers have to use Vaseline Intensive Care on their hands!

Haha no but I have very crinkly hands now.

All done and finished by 4pm not bad really a nice relaxing brewday compared to normal as I got loads of the stuff ready last night.

Ended up with 22 litres @ 1055.3 was aiming for 23 @ 1056 so not too bad.

man was this one oily! Took me ages to get the stains out of the boiler....looked like treacle :shock:

Managed to get some more figures this time round and have found out the following...

7.5lts lost to absorption in the mash
700ml lost to mash tun dead space
3 litres lost to the boil
2.5 litres lost to trub and protein

Is this about average? quite happy overall just sat relaxing with a pint of AG6 which is still young but lovely none the less :D

Sounds about right to me - apart from the the grain absorbtion which is normally about 1L per Kilo - although that's just a kind for "rule of thumb" number....

Brewing Stout is great fun isn't it? There's just something about the lovely pitch blackness that makes a man happy!

Nice work!

Thanks ADm it all thanks to you for the recipe! :D

I always thought the absorbtion thing was 1.5lts per kg of grain? Like you say its going to be different.....
