Snowed In Double Brew Day

Post by haz66 » Tue Dec 22, 2009 10:49 am

Well seeing as our attemps have been twice thwarted at getting to work this week,
our company have decided that that is now it until after Xmas, so i find myself with a bonus
day off work :D , so i`m going to do a double brew day to make the most of it,
first up i`m doing a lager for the wife, again based on Horden Hillbillys recipe.

3000g Lager Malt
400g Flaked Maize
400g Caramalt
200g Cane Sugar
35g Crystal Hops @ 60mins AA 4.9%
5g Crystal Hops @ 10mins AA 4.9%

Target 23ltrs @ OG1041
BU:GU 0.46 IBU`s 19.18

This is now about 40 mins into the mash.
And Sparge water heating up.

The 2nd is now going to be called
Half Cocked (after the bad ending to the brewday)

3500g MO Pale
300g Wheat
100g Chocolate Malt
25g Aurora @ 60mins AA 8.1%
15g Challenger @ 20mins AA 6.3%
15g Challenger @ 10mins AA 6.3%

Target 23ltrs @ OG1039
BU:GU 0.82 IBU`s 32.22

Its very similar to Coniston Bluebird apart from the Chocolate replaces the Crystal
and FWH are Aurora instead of Challenger, i did an all Aurora brew thats turned out
very nice so thought i`d try mixing with Challenger as they should go well together.

I`ll sparge the lager then i`ll have to put it to one side while i get the mash ready
for brew 2, then boil the lager while 2nd one is mashing.

you really are mad for these double brew days. =D>
I'm laying off brewing until after Christmas now, It was tempting to brew last Sat, just a bit of bottling later on today then finish cleaning the Kitchen!
That second one sounds interesting, bet the choc malt really give it a nice edge :)

I bought the Chocolate Malt off Paul when i did the beer swap with you,so its been
hanging around just waiting to go into a brew, so i thought i`d put it in this one to
see what flavour and colour it gives it.
I originaly bought it to do a Cotleigh Barn Owl Clone, but for some reason have never
got around to brewing it yet.

All went well with the first brew apart from i forgot to add the sugar #-o
Just just whizzed it in the fermenter.

On the 2nd brew the element tripped out with 15mins to go, so protafloc, chiller and 2nd
hop addition had only been in 5mins, so i just chucked the remanding hops in and let them
steep for about half an hour, so not sure how this will turn out, the protafloc seems to be working
ok on the wort in the sample jar, just worried the chiller may not have got sterilised enough, i hope
it did because this smelt very nice going into the FV.
Also not sure now what the IBU`s will be, but on a positive i ended up with 25ltrs at the correct gravity.

Just having a sample of the Half Cocked and its turned out fantastic,
really nice and hoppy, and a nice IPA bitter finish, but nothing to serious like Punk IPA,
just nice enough to make you notice, this was not intended as an IPA but that what its ended up like,
but i like it, and its a nice colour from the Chocolate and without the chocolate taste, well impressed,
just off for another :D
