Hi all

Well its my first time posting a brewday on here so be gentle! Recipe is a dumbed down version of Stone's Arrogant Bastard Ale, which although I've never had, sounded pretty tasty. The recipe specifics for 54 litres with an expected OG of 1.055 are:

83.3 10.50 kg. Pale Malt Marris Otter
5.6 0.70 kg. Munich Malt
5.6 0.70 kg. Aromatic Malt
5.6 0.70 kg. CaraMunich 40

45.00 g. Pacific Gem Pellet 16.30 43.6 60 min.
45.00 g. Chinook Pellet 11.40 8.1 15 min.
45.00 g. Chinook Pellet 11.40 0.0 0 min.

DCL Yeast US-05 American ale

Very pleased with the day despite the snow and a collapsed gazeebo (don't ask), got it wrapped up in 5 hours which included a 90 minute mash and a 75 minute boil. I'll tell the rest of the story with pictures.

A little help is needed with this much! B&Q plaster mixer is my best buy of 2009!

This bad boy is a little bit full
Image

Rest temp was a bit low, I was aiming for 152 but I'm guessing 'sex on a stick' knocked out a lot of the heat

Recirculating. With the false bottom I find the wort is clear straight away but still has large particles if you get what I mean. These are 1 litre jugs and I normally recirculate about 6 litres.

Lovely colour :D

The sparge. I mash and sparge inside and boil outside, until I get the brewshed built that is!
Image

Coming up to a boil. The G clamp is to stop the lid sliding back on and causing a boilover.

Hops, beautiful hops :D
Image

pre-boil volume of 64.5 litres at 15.3 brix. Crap photo but I'll try better next time!

My mess of a whirlpool immersion chiller
Image

Chill man! I've built a whirlpool immersion chiller which I'll try and link a video to of it in action. Trust me. It works!
Image

Chillin' while chilling. My Anchor Steam rip off.
Image

My babies, soon to be tucked up :D
Image

Oh and SWMBO knocked the mash tun lid onto a battery I was charging :=P

All the best

Cheers kfm, that was with a 90 minute mash too!

Cracking brew day. Like your whirl pool chiller. A 'how to' would be great! :D

Floydmeddler; Jamil has got a full write-up on the whirlpool chiller on his website, where I got the idea from. Out of shot is a march pump I picked up from fleabay for 40 quid.

Jubby; Chinooks are a favourite since I brewed this for the first time last xmas, and I upped the aroma hops this time round
