Brewed this today, one for bottles I think:
85% Pale Malt
10% Munich Malt
5% Vienna Malt
Mashed for 70 minutes at 68 deg C
OG 1057
FG 1012 (?)
Volume: 25 litres
This would give an ABV of about 5.8%
36g Columbus 14% AA for 60 minute boil
68g Columbus 14% AA for 5 minute boil
46g Columbus 14% AA steep
60 IBUs
Nottingham yeast
A reasonably smooth brewday, although my (previously unstoppable) hopstopper seemed to struggle with the run off. I don't think it was the hops though, but rather break material. I had noticed during the boil that the wort was very clear and there was a lot of break floating about. Sure enough, afterwards when I was cleaning the boiler out, there was a thick deposit of break material all over the gauze which had obviously restricted the wort flow. I resorted to scraping the hopstopper a bit during the runoff as it was that slow.
All tucked up in the FV now, hoping this will be ready for bottling early next week.

Nice one, that's going to be a hoppy one for sure.
Where did you get the Columbus from? It's a hop i've been meaning to try for a while.

Yes it should be a hoppy one. The hops were a donation from a friend; a one off unfortunately.

A shame really as beers made with this hop are usually outstanding. I believe craftbrewer sells them though?

Yeah they do. Theres a few other hops I want to try though and I can't justify the expense for a Craftbrewer order.

I looked on the craftbrewer website cos I was going to put an order in, but im sure they've put their prices up. They seem a lot more expensive than they did the last time I bought from them

Sounds great.
Thats one I would be interested in doing a swap for. Columbus is a hop I would love to get my hands on.

Just before Xmas I brewed the Townes IPA using Columbus instead of Cascade. It tastes and smells lovely already but has not cleared fully yet (it is in bottles). I am expecting this to improve a lot in the next couple of weeks:
Pale Malt 5 EBC 9 lbs. 11.4 oz 4410 grams 96.2%
Wheat Malt 3.5 EBC 0 lbs. 6.2 oz 175 grams 3.8%
Columbus (Tomahawk) Whole 14.4 % 90 mins 0 lbs. 0.9 oz 25 grams 100%
Columbus (Tomahawk) Whole 14.4 % 15 mins 0 lbs. 0.0 oz 0 grams 0%
Final Volume: 23 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.045
Final Gravity: 1.010
Alcohol Content: 4.5% ABV
Total Liquor: 32.9 Litres
Mash Liquor: 11.5 Litres
Mash Efficiency: 75 %
Bitterness: 40 EBU
Colour: 7 EBC
I got a load of Columbus from my local microbrewery for something like £2 per 100g. I definitely recommend it if you like Cascade. I also got Galena which seems very similar. I plan to do another IPA soon with Columbus. Any thoughts on this recipe I guys?
Low Colour Pale Malt 2.5 EBC 10 lbs. 12.6 oz 4890 grams 86.7%
Wheat Malt 3.5 EBC 0 lbs. 8.8 oz 250 grams 4.4%
Crystal Malt 130 EBC 0 lbs. 8.8 oz 250 grams 4.4%
Flaked Barley 0 EBC 0 lbs. 8.8 oz 250 grams 4.4%
Cascade Whole 5.7 % 90 mins 0 lbs. 0.4 oz 10 grams 10.5%
Styrian Goldings Whole 4.5 % 90 mins 0 lbs. 0.4 oz 10 grams 10.5%
Columbus (Tomahawk) Whole 15 % 90 mins 0 lbs. 0.5 oz 15 grams 15.8%
Cascade Whole 5.7 % 15 mins 0 lbs. 0.4 oz 10 grams 10.5%
Columbus (Tomahawk) Whole 15 % 15 mins 0 lbs. 0.4 oz 10 grams 10.5%
Columbus (Tomahawk) Whole 15 % 0 mins 0 lbs. 1.4 oz 40 grams 42.1%
Final Volume: 21 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.060
Final Gravity: 1.014
Alcohol Content: 6% ABV
Total Liquor: 31.7 Litres
Mash Liquor: 14.1 Litres
Mash Efficiency: 75 %
Bitterness: 46 EBU
Colour: 16 EBC
This wil be bottled and left to mature for a few months.

Bottled tonight, OG ended up at 1010 (doh, Nottingham attenuates again . . . although the body of the hydrometer sample would suggest otherwise

), so about 6.1% abv.
Give it a few weeks and I'll start tucking in.
