whils the cat is away.- christening II

Post by Deebee » Sun Mar 21, 2010 9:36 pm

Well seeing as the wife is still in hospital, and seeing as the beer supplies are totally zero i used a few hous of yesterday evening to make me a classic pale ale. This was actually the same recipe as the very first Ag i did back in may 2009

the recipe is as follows.

20 litre brewlength

Pale malt 3200
crystal malt 46
wheat malt 256
cara pils 256

Hops

16 g target 13% for 60
15 g fuggles (4.1% for 15
15 more at 5

Wl 007 yeast in a 1 litre starter.

OG 1044 IBY 32.7

Everything went ok again with the new kit. I have a few small issues with the speed of the run off and have to constantly adjust this butit is a learning curve. The boiler on the other hand is awesome and saves me at least 75 minuts. total time from doughing in to pitching the yeast was 4.5 hours with another 45 minutes clear up time. Everything is now cleaned on the same day and the kit put away early the nxt. no hassel and no nasty gunge to get into the following day.

and so BREWPORN!

The grain bill ready for the water to heat

and the hoppy luvlies!
Image

Again using the forums strike calc i hit the desired mash temp of 66.1 ( you'll have to take my word for it.

Image

and then left to rest. inside the lid of the mt is extra padded with thick camping mats, there is also a 15 mm thick foam pad on he top of the grain and towels on top of this again.

Image

And so the sparge begins. Fly sparging as usual and i recirculated the first 2 litres until the runnings were clear and bright.

then into the boiler it trickled. I have found that a sparge of 75 minutes or so is effective at extracting the max sugar i can ( any slower and i am sure it would stick.

Image

After the sparge was finished i had 25 litres in the boiler. I have deadspace and trub losses of 2 litres and a 15 5 evaporation meaning i should have had 20 litres in the fv.

The hot break came and then one of the elments started the thing rolling

Image

Image

The second element bought the brew to a boil and in went the Target
Image

45 minutes later in went the first of the fuggles and a potofloc as always ( i love this stuff)

Image

and 10 miuntes later the final bundle of hops along with the IC

Image

WHilst the boil was on i took .5 litres of wort out of the boil and cooled it. i tipped the liquid from the finished starter off and re piched the wort. Aerated with a paddle and it started to fizz!!!
Image

The chiller did its thing and i aerated the wort into the fv whilst decanting the active starter as well. This FV is a wine balloon and i used a funnle. this gave great aeration... i was amazed actualy.

Image

And then in the boiler the amount of trub and spent hops.

Image

I ended up with 22litres in the Fv at 1042 which is slightly more than i aimed at bu 2 points weaker. I blame this om me wondering how much was left in the MT and opening the tap fully with 25 minutes to go. Either way it seems that efficiency is once again at the 80 % mark

Image

So in the two evenings og " man time " i had to disposition i made 45 litres ofgoodies.

in all a good weekend

Image

The fermentation started within 45 minutes .. ever so slowly. This morning it was progressing nicely and i hope it will be finished intime for kegging during the one of the many naps the baby has during the day.... nex week....

Next brew is a clone of an adnams brew and a kentish ale.

80% is pretty damn good!

I batch sparge and get about 75%. Would you recommend fly sparging over batch?

Good brewday!

i have only ever used fly. Basically i jug water over it. I pour water on to a plastic plate or something in order to stop it channeling. Just remember to record how much you have added.↲I am far from an expert though:)

I'd have liked to NOT have topped up the boiler in order to see what the everage efficiency was over the 2 brews to be honest Thats the only thing that went wrong.

I'll have about 15 litres of kegs left after this lot is kegged/bottled so i'll have enough for one more batch.

All being well i'll get some drunk to in order for me to make something lighter for the summer.

Something along the lnes of Adnams lighthouse would be really cool. 3.4-3.6 5 and hoppy. :)

Very nice! I used Double 07 here recently. To my tastes, it's very similar to US-05. Although it's much easier to work with.

I am so in the dog house!↲The mrs came home with the baby on monday and went nuts when she say 2 fv bubbling away.↲Thinks i was out of order brewing whilst there is so much to be done in the house:-(↲I tried to explain that we were out of beer and that this was done in order to re stock so we had some for the christening, and because i knew that brewing was totally non viable for ct least the next 6 weeks.↲I think i might adol as i have hardly looked ct the stuff since she came home. Will be taking a sample to check later when her and the small person are having a nap. Washing of legs and kegging will be an evening activity and as soon as the first week is done then i will neede to get the stuff out of the house.↲And there was me who is another 15 litres of kegs to fill. . .↲Any sensible solutions guys?
