Started out a totally different recipe!!

Post by Spikesdad » Mon Mar 29, 2010 9:14 am

Hi guys,

yesterday, I decided that today, i would attempt a Deuchars IPA (as per G.W's book). Thats great I hear you cry.

so, I pre boiled the liquor, weighed grains, all in preparation for today. And got off to a great start, strike temp bang on for once, and started mash at 66.1C. :)

So weigh out hops while mashing, looks at my recipe sheet and it says 'Atlas Styrians', and I think strange, I cant remeber seeing those at all in G.w's book. :?

What I've got is this...

Deuchars IPA
Date: 20/03/10
Gyle Number: AG5
Fermentable Colour lb: oz Grams Ratio
Pale Malt 5 EBC 8 lbs. 11.0 oz 3940 grams 89%
Torrefied Wheat 4 EBC 0 lbs. 10.3 oz 290 grams 6.6%
Crystal Malt 130 EBC 0 lbs. 6.9 oz 195 grams 4.4%

Hop Variety Type Alpha Time lb: oz grams Ratio
Fuggle Whole 4.1 % 60 mins 0 lbs. 0.6 oz 17 grams 19.8%
Atlas Styrian Whole 7.9 % 60 mins 0 lbs. 0.6 oz 17 grams 19.8%
Challenger Whole 6.7 % 15 mins 0 lbs. 0.6 oz 17 grams 19.8%
Fuggle Whole 4.1 % 5 mins 0 lbs. 0.6 oz 17 grams 19.8%
Golding Whole 5.9 % 5 mins 0 lbs. 0.6 oz 18 grams 20.9%

Windsor Yeast pitched @_____________°C

Final Volume: 23 Litres
Original Gravity:Est/ Act 1.043 /
Final Gravity: Est/ Act 1.010 /
Alcohol Content: 4.3% ABV
Grain Temp /Weight /4120
Total Liquor: 32.7 Litres
Boil Target 30 Litres
Strike Temp
Mash Liquor @ 11.1 L 66 °C
Mashout Vol. @ 9.5 79 °C
Sparge Vol. @ 15 77 °C
Mash Efficiency: 75 %
Bitterness: 31 EBU
Colour: 15 EBC

Which is nothing like the Deuchars IPA recipe!!! Oh well, too late I thought, Its mashing now, then, after weighing hops, I found another bag of hops in freezer, yup, you guessed it, the Atlas Styrians!! I had weighed out Cluster hops instead, so this is still going to be a good beer, right??

Please tell me its still gonna be a good beer. [-o<

Cheers all

I'm in a similar boat to you, I tried a GW Londone Pride but found I didn't have enough of one grain and had to use different hops.
I have very little idea what effect different grains and hop varieties have on finished beer so I usually work closely to a known recipe or thereabouts but I record everything so at least I can duplicate it if it turns out to be a winner but whatever comes out, I don't think its going to be undrinkable
