First Evening Brew - 31/03/2010 (pic heavy!!)

In an effort to build up stocks for the early season BBQs, I thought I'd get a brew on after coming home from work :)
Doing an hour mash and boil I figured I'd get done and cleared up by 10:30.

As it'll be doing it's thang while we're away over Easter, a suitably themed name...

The dark crystal was a late addition, I planned on 7% plain crystal but ran out!
Image

I got the water treated and weighed out the grains and a little Gypsum on Tuesday and got the mash liquor on at 5:35 as soon as I came home.
Image

Doughing-in
Image

Mash temperature just about spot on :)
Image

Put to bed in the house for an hour - lost nearly 4°C, I must get round to putting a couple more layers of Therawrap round the tun!
Image

My rather Heath Robinson approach to sparging- a pizza baking tray :D. Stuck to start with but a gentle blow up the tube got things going.
I've only just switched to fly sparging, whilst I'm not noticing any change in efficiency (still around 75%) I do get a much better run off compared to batch sparging as the grain bed is not disturbed.

First runnings
Image

Hops ready to go in
Image

Time for a pint of Bridge Bitter from my new shiny font- cheers for the heads up from whoever it was on here who spotted it on E-Bay- a bargain at 99p (+ £17 postage) :D
Image

First wort hops go in as the boil starts
Image

Nice rolling boil. I've knocked a load of time from by brewdays buy using a HLT (next project is to get an element in there) and getting the boiler elements on as soon as they are covered. As opposed to sparging from the boiler and running of into a lauter tun then tipping into the boiler when done sparging.
Image

Cooling
Image

Finally got round to using the Thames Vally II that Barnsely Brewer kindly sent me- Cheers BB :D
Image

Cold break. Protafloc is so much better that Irish Moss =D>
Image

Nice clear wort. I've taken to letting the wort rest after removing the chiller before filling the FV, 20 minutes ensures a lovely clear wort
Image

A whole loda filth :D
Image

Hydro sample spot on @ 1.040 :D :D
Image

Pitching the yeast.
Image

Close enough to 23l in the FV
Image

And all done before 10 O'clock- a nice evenings work :D
Image

After 17 brews, I think I've got this brewing lark sussed, the last 3 brews or so have gone really well. With this brew taking less taking less than 4 1/2 hours I'll be brewing in the evenings more often!

Cheers,
Jamie

Letting the wort rest before running off really makes a huge difference! I was always paranoid about infection and wanted to get the FV put away as soon as possible but taking things a bit slower pays off

Jamie

Is that a youngs FV you're using as a boiler? I was gonna grab one from wilkos but it looked really flimsy and I was paranoid it wouldn't stand up to a 60 minute boil. :?

Hi Befuddler,

Nope, I got one of the 30l ones Hop and Grape sold before they switched to more flimsy ones. There was a thread recently about plastic boilers- have a look through the equipment section.

EDIT: here it is!

Cheers,
Jamie

Nice one Jabba! Looks like a nice smooth brew-evening was had!

It certainly gets easier as you do more brews.....then you start upgrading your brewery and things start to go tits up again for a while....

Yep, after a plateau the brewing learning curve is on an upwoood trajectory again as I'm trying to get my head round RIMS, HERMS, PIDs...

Jamie

Nah, it's been showing the low battery warning for months now!! I should get one though ready to pop in when it does finally die!

Cheers,
Jamie

Blimey JabbA, that is clear wort! 20 min rest you say... might have to try that.

Also what size are the holes in your hop stopper? The one I built looks very similar to yours but blocks every time.

I built a boiler from a 30 litre Youngs fermenter and two kettle elements and it works fine. I was a little bit paranoid like you so I tested nearly full (of water) in the garden for a two hour boil and it held up fine (even with a plastic tap).

I have since swapped the tap for a ball valve and tank connector (mostly to attach my hop stopper) but the bucket has held up fine.

Young's fermenter? Glad you posted this as I have always thought they would and wondered why no one used them. Nice to know of another definite cheap boiler option.

Hi Drew,

They are 3mm counter-sunk holes, not really had a problem with blocked run off, has been a bit slow once or twice but apart from that AOK!

cheers,
Jamie
