Trio of Summer Pales

Post by andybiochem » Sat Jul 10, 2010 12:06 pm

Hi,

Thought I'd post some of my recent brews, all of which have been pale ales to enjoy in the sun!
I've stopped taking photos during the brew session (they all come out the same to be honest, and look like this), so I'll just be posting the labels and end result when I get round to drinking them.

Brew No 10 - Highly Dependable Summer Pale
Image
Goal (according to Beer Engine)
15L
EBC - 8
EBU - 54
OG - 1.040 (actual 1.038)
FG - 1.010 (actual 1.006)
ABV - 5.0% (actual 4.2%)

Ingredients
2430g Pale Malt
270g Caramalt

10g Chinook (90 mins) (12.7% AA)
7g Centennial (60 mins) (11.7% AA)
33g Cascade (15 mins) (6.3% AA)
20g Cascade (0 mins)
7g Cascade) (dry-hop)

Hook Norton Double Stout yeast (from bottle)

Tasting Notes (so far)
Very drinkable effort, cloudy despite fining in the secondary, perhaps a little grassy from the dry hop too.

Brew No 12 - Deftly Reliable Summer Pale
Image
Goal (according to Beer Engine)
15L
EBC - 8
EBU - 57
OG - 1.056 (actual 1.046 :( )
FG - 1.010 (actual 1.009)
ABV - 5.6% (actual 4.8%)

Ingredients
3381g Pale Malt
375g Torrefied Wheat

12g Chinook (60 mins) (12.7% AA)
7g Challenger (60 mins) (7.6% AA)
12g Chinook (30 mins)
12g Challenger (30 mins)
7g Pilgrim (0 mins) (9.4% AA)
6g Centennial (0 mins) (11.7% AA)
7g Challenger (0 mins)
15g Progress (0 mins) (5.5% AA)
20g Cascade (0 mins) (6.3% AA)
10g Styrian Goldings (0 mins) (4.5% AA)

Nottingham yeast (sachet)

Tasting Notes (so far)
Cloudy again, an odd honey-like taste which is fairly pleasant. Was hoping for much more hop aroma. Again, very drinkable.

Brew No 13 - Alestas
Image
Goal (according to Beer Engine)
15L
EBC - 22
EBU - 38
OG - 1.056 (actual 1.048 :( )
FG - 1.010 (actual 1.008)
ABV - 5.6% (actual 5.2%)

Ingredients
3003g Pale Malt
200g Crystal Malt
133g Caramalt
218g White Sugar
100g Torrefied Wheat

10g Target (90 mins) (12.9% AA)
30g Goldings (20 mins) (6.8% AA)
10g Challenger (0 mins) (7.6% AA)
6g Chinook (0 mins) (12.7% AA)
30g Fuggle (0 mins) (3.9% AA)
30g Goldings (0 mins)
22g Cascade (-10 mins during cooling) (6.3% AA)
10g Centennial (-10 mins during cooling) (6.3% AA)

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale yeast (from bottle)

Tasting Notes (so far)
OOOF! Serious hop presence here (cooling-hop addition effect?). Also nicely sweet. May have extracted a tiny bit of harshness from early hop additions, but mostly masked by the overwhelming aroma hops! Reminds me of Jaipur somewhat (although it's nowhere near as nice/refined as that).

Will post more photos when I open some more bottles.

Cheers!

Nice labels but I think I should tell you've got a typo... you've spelt malt wrong on the second one. I hope you haven't stuck them all on yet.

Some interesting brews there. Nice lables too, I could sell bottles of p1ss with lables like that, even with typo's. Very envious  bit of a computer biff when it comes to making lables. Slightly cloudy beers? - well as long as they taste good. At No.40 it's usually because the corny has been disturbed, or have gone from grain to glass in 6 days, with no finnings

Good work there =D>

arrrgh! LOL, 27 bottles of ale saying they're made from 'amlt'. #-o #-o #-o

Oh well, if anyone asks I'll just say it's a speciality malt :^o

Thanks for the kind words!

Nice labels but I'm not sure about your hop habit.
There have gotta be some very confused flavours and aromas in there.

Typo on 'Intensely' too. Sorry, it's the didactic streak in me.
Nice labels though.

Yeah, fair cop. I was getting frustrated with the lack of hop flavour/aroma in my brews, so I was just pushing the envelope to see what happened. Think I got lucky with the Alestas, but the Deftly Reliable does taste a little odd...not unpleasant at all, just odd. Now I think I know what is necessary for in-your-face hops, I'll probably try some simpler brews.

Nah, speciality malt that.
