Post by delboy » Thu Mar 15, 2007 8:19 pm

Just about to start the mash for a Sierra Nevada Pale ale clone. Got it from an american forum (the poster was helped by the head brewer of SNPA to formulate the recipe) hoping for greats things!!

I'd be interested to know how it compares to the original :)
Any chance you could share the recipe :?:

Here is the orginal in F and lbs, i haven't time to but up the exact amounts etc im using (didn't have magnums/using perle as the bittering hop as well as the flavour hop in my tweak, oh and i'm using MO for the pale malt). Busy doing this and watching newcastle trying hard to get put out of the uefa cup  .
I'll fire up my version of the recipe later on :D, hopefully it'll be very similar to the real thing (oh yeah using the proper liquid yeast california 01 which is the same strain apparently, although US56 is supposed to work fine too).

I'm sure somebody has already undertaken this, may be worth checking through the history a bit.
Best of luck, it's on the to-do list :)

I've seen that recipe online, let us know how it turns out.
I did a SNPA last October taken in part from other recipes I've seen and altered a bit in promash, which turned out great.
A definite must brew again sometime soon beer. :D

I ended up using about 160g of hops in this, left them all loose in the boil (usually i bag the bittering hops) to extract the maximun flavour (the hops schedule more so than the grain bill seem to be imp in this ale).
What a pita the hop strainer was completely overloaded, i had to stir like a madman around the hop strainer to get the boiler to drain (for about 1/2 hour). All the trub ended up in the fermenting bucket but i guess thats just the same as a CFC system.
I tasted the wort and it seems a lot hoppier than previous brews so i hope im on the right track.

Overhit the gravity as well 1059-1060 instead of 1052 (eff of 65% for the recipe), i'll have to stop estimating my efficency so low (i seem to hit the low to mid 70s each time).

I've got this in the primary pot at the moment, it's quite clear, ready for bottling and it smells deeeeeelicious,

Hi Garth
Did you stick completely with the hopping schedule (i found by the time i upped it by 1.2 for u.k. gallons and 1.1 for non pellet utilisation their was a lot of hops to go in).
Take a taster when bottling and let me know if it retained its 'dry hopped' aroma (i know it isn't dry hopped but thats the best explaination of the aroma i can come up with).

Any word on that snpa clone garth. mine is still in the primary with a load of gunk on it that looks like its going to need to be skimmed.

Hey sorry delboy, I somehow missed this post,

the SNPA is bottled, the taster at bottling revealed quite a bitter taste which will probably need time to mellow, the Casacde which I think makes SNPA what it is was coming through lovely though, even when in the f bin. I didn't up the hops though, I didn't realise that I should have.

I stuck to the hop schedule fairly strictly. Instead of adding the last lot of Cascade at flame out, I stuffed my newly built hopback with Cascade and let the wort drain through them from the boiler then into the cfc and then into the fv, they smelt lovely when I was emptying them out.

I used the best part of a 125g vacpac of Cascade, I'm really into this hop now.

Considering I still have a fair bit Magnum and Perle left, I'll probably do this one again.

Cascade is one of those hops you either love or hate. Isn't it?

Personally I thinks it's Ok.
