AG#2 Deuchars IPA

Post by JontyR » Tue Nov 16, 2010 12:01 pm

I'll not go into too many details as Manx Guy did this brew yesterday - glad to hear the yeast's working away Guy!!

I'm doing a 60 minute boil so I've tweaked the hops via beer engine to get the same EBU as GW's recipe with a 90 minute boil.

I've noticed a couple of things I need to sort out before next brew day:

1) don't forget to take the AA of your hops into account when planning your recipe - my fuggles are at a lot lower AA than those in GW's recipe, so when i'd weighed mine the other night and had 70 - odd grams I thought I had more than plenty as the recipe in the book needed 61, after doing the calculations this morning I had to scrape the bag clean to get my required 74. I was half expecting to have to dash out to barley bottom whilst the mash was on

2) at the moment I've neen using 1/2" food grade pipe to connect to taps / sparge arm etc, just heating the end with hot water and pushing it over the 15mm copper pipe on my ball valve or sparge arm - I need to come up with a better aproach to this which is easier to connect/disconnect..... Any sugestions would be appreciated

Hi Jonty,

I had the same issue as you with the hops - and as such didn't have enough to do a 60 minutes boil - although I thought the same...

However the hops smelled great and the beer should be a good one.

I can't comment on alternatives to food grade tubing as I do the same... I did try using braided 16mm food grade pipe and a s/s hose clamp- but found the softer stuff easier to use and therefore preferable...

Hope the rest of the brewday goes well for you!

Cheers!

Guy

Hi Jonty
You seem to be on a roll :D
Hope all went well.

If you can get some 1/2" Braided pipe it should fit snuggly into a JG fitting, this is the route i`m taking, so i can just stick a 15mm to 15mm
straight JG fitting onto the 15mm outlet pipe from the tap and then just connect the 1/2" pipe into it, it should be quick release.
If you are unsure what i`m on about i`ll bring some over and show you what i mean.

Thanks Mark, I have some of the hose, I'll get down to the plumbing suppliers and check out the JG fittings.

Very slipery mate :D I've loved putting the kit together and loved the brewing.

These john guest fittings are great, 15mm speedfit to 1/2" hose. They make for a very flexible system.

rated to about 80degrees but I've never had any problems with boiling water.

how'd the brew go?

Thanks, I'll have a look for them.

The brew went really well mate. I ended up 4 points over the the predicted OG but I'm not really worried about that at the moment, I'm keen to get the routine/process sorted. I don't have a chiller so I'm leaving the icy northern winds to cool the wort at the moment so from opening the garage door to get the gear out to cleaning up at the end it's about 4 hours.

I tried rehydrating the yeast for the 1st time which went well and there's a nice thick krausen (sp?) on the brew this morning.
