AG#3 Landlord

Post by JontyR » Tue Nov 30, 2010 2:06 pm

This is boiling away at the moment. It's an approximation og the GW recipe ad my scales have decided to play silly buggers this morning and basically act like a random number generator. I also managed to trip the RCD whilst sparging by draining the HLT past the element whilst it was switched on

Scales depending, the recipe is

Tim Taylors Landlord
Date: 30/11/10
Gyle Number:
Fermentable Colour lb: oz Grams Ratio
Pale Malt 5 EBC 10 lbs. 2.9 oz 4620 grams 99.3%
Black Malt 1300 EBC 0 lbs. 1.2 oz 33 grams 0.7%

Hop Variety Type Alpha Time lb: oz grams Ratio
Golding Whole 5.2 % 60 mins 0 lbs. 1.3 oz 36 grams 37.1%
Styrian Goldings Whole 3.8 % 60 mins 0 lbs. 1.2 oz 35 grams 36.1%
Styrian Goldings Whole 3.8 % 10 mins 0 lbs. 0.9 oz 26 grams 26.8%

Final Volume: 25 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.042
Final Gravity: 1.010
Alcohol Content: 4.1% ABV
Total Liquor: 35.2 Litres
Mash Liquor: 11.6 Litres
Mash Efficiency: 75 %
Bitterness: 35.3823047576958 EBU
Colour: 20 EBC

The mash tun didn't lose anything during the mash so, in respect of the current weather I'm very pleased.

Now in fermenter with an OG of 1041 which is 1 point under the estimated so I'm well happy with that.

I've just realised that I didn't use a sieve when draining into the fermenter - I must write a checklist for AG#4

Nice work :)
I find if you recycle the run off to fermenter for a couple of litres at a nice slow flow rate you don't really need a sieve (which I see as one less thing to contaminate your beer) :)

Well done Jonty
Bloody hell you are fairly flying with the brews now, 1 a week so far, and soon you`ll be able to drink some of it :D

Thanks for that, I'll give it a try next time.

I'm trying to get a few kegs filled so that I can hopefully keep myself properly stocked. I think I might have a go at a single hop brew next like we spoke about.

For a single hop brew i would either go for Fuggle or Challenger as a start,
The Pendle witch clone in GW book is a good one for Fuggle and a Coniston Bluebird Bitter
is a good one for Challenger, either brew is nice so its just down to chose, i have a quite a lot of spare Fuggle
that you are welcome to have free of charge if you want to do a Pendle Witch clone, just let me know and i`ll
get them to you.

No need for anything for them, but a bottle of your TTL would be nice :D

I've read so much on here about Landlord and found a bottle in the offie today.
I hope it lives up to expectations .
You'll need to start putting in the miles on that bike Jonty if you're going to keep up with you're brewing schedule :)

In my experience it's one of the most disappointing bottled beers out there.

The cask version is so good but the bottled one often doesn't even taste like the same beer to me.

Agree the bottled version is poor compared to the draught which is one of my favorite beers.

I thought the bottle was ok, but then I've not had the draught or am I lightly to a sI'm on the right side of the Irish sea :)
I enjoyed it enough that I would consider brewing a version, especially if it was going to be better than the bottle!
Would this be a good recipe for a good aproxamation?

Spud395 - I'n not sure what mine will turn out like but I'll be kegging/bottling it at the end of the week, more than happy to stick some into a PET bottle and send it over the water if you like.

You're right about putting the miles in, I'm not sure how many calories are in each of the barrels I've got in the garage but I'm sure it's not good :D

That'd be super JontyR, if it's not a hassle.
I'll pm you my address.

Got out on the bike this morning, some interesting trails in hardpack ice.
I could really do with putting in a bit more time in the saddle myself this weather
