What makes a steam beer????
I'm hoping to find time in the Christmas week off work to get a couple of brews in... are you still working or already on holiday?

"Steaming" = fermenting a beer with lager yeast at (or near) ale temperatures. The "classic" example is Anchor Steam beer from San Fran. Nice it is too - Northern Brewer goodness abounds :) Hope it's gone well!

Had an Anchor Steam last night, I think it's a great beer. Northern Brewer are quite unique, not like any other hops.

Knops California Common from Stirling is a good example of the style (I reckon) if you can get it.

that was my understanding of it coatseg! I pitched the yeast this am (2L starter) so hopefully it will just chug away over christmas. I'm going straight up to the folks after work so I'll have no way of knowing if it's taken or not until I get back on Monday! The starter was built up over the last few weeks from 500ml, to 1L to 2L and each time it went off like a rocket so hopefully all will be well! :D

never hear of that one M! will have to look it up! Anchor steam is one of my favourites! I had one in Leeds last weekend which made me pull my finger out and get some NB in!

on an aside, I was quite suprised at how clear the beer was going into the FV last night considering I didnt crash cool it with the IC! I turned the boil off and added the steep hops, then buggered off down to me mates house for an hour or so to help him set up his gorlfriends new computer and forward some ports on their router. I came back about an hour later with some takeaway and almost forgott about the beer (probable due to the 0 sleep in 36 hours! :D)

I had probably left it for a good 2 hours before puting it into the FV! It was still steaming but the sample I ttok out for the hydrometer reading was almost crystal clear! :D

This morning when I came to add the yeast there was a few layers of break in the fv but nowhere near as much as when I did the kolsch last weekend! :D

Well I'm having a pint of this now! Its...........good! but not what I wanted! Saying that I had a bottle of anchor steam the other night and was disappointed that it wasn't up to what i remembered!

I know whats going to happen though! I'll drink through the keg, tutting at every pint, and then, the last 3 pints are going to be awesome cos the beer has had time to condition! Then I'll be cursing myself that I didn't give it time!

Oh well, at least I'm not delusional! lol :D
