Brewday 21/01/11 - Citra lager

Post by mysterio » Fri Jan 21, 2011 1:05 pm

Boiling this at the mo... Citra smell great out the packet. I get strong lime zest.

Why the lager yeast ... ? I'm racking my Vienna lager and may as well use the yeast I reckon.

Will probably throw some dry hops in next week too :D

Tucked up and fermenting at 10c. My oxygen tank ran out so I gave it a good old slosh around to aerate.

Ended up with 5kg each of lager and MO and 1.2kg of Caramalt.

No problem brosef

Should be a hoppy one. The Citra were super fresh.

Sampling this from the FV now.

Citra is surprisingly mellow, not a big 'punch you in the face' American hop. It's flavour is tropical fruits, mango and pineapple. Very little acidity like you get from other US hops.

I would like to try this with a smaller percentage of Amarillo, maybe 75/25, or even 50/50 with Goldings.

Nice hop, similar to Aurora. I will definitely be ordering more of this.

Sounds a good one.

Everyone seems to be brewing with Citra just now. Aurora is one of my favourites along with Progress and Crystal.

I would probably say in the range of Fuggles and Goldings style, but there is something extra. I really like them good mid range Alpha acid of 5.6% from Copper Kettle.

Beer Smith states "Used for: Bittering and aroma in English Ales
Aroma: Similar to Fuggles, aromatic, slightly sweet
Substitutes: Fuggles"

Citra Lager - sounds weird. I get the Aurora reference and the lager yeast reference though. I just used both in this brew, which has strangely enough turned out to be the best beer I've ever made. In fact I had to put 5 bottles aside in case there is a competition soon. I'm pretty sure this one won't even make it to 3 weeks old.... =P~
