Iv'e at last done my first all grain brew today, I started at about 10:45 this morning and eventually got everything cleaned up and put away at about 5:30 this afternoon. It took a bit longer than I had anticipated - mainly due to it taking longer to heat the water and bring the wort to the boil. All in all though I think it went well - I've got something that looks and smells like beer anyway!

Recipe was Black Sheep Ale from Graham Wheeler's BYOBRAAH

I didn't take too many photos during the day, as I wanted to concentrate on what I was doing, Enjoy!

The Grist:

The Mash:

Mash Temp:
To begin with the mash temp was too high, a bit of cold water and this was soon corrected - 66.4 is close enough!
I forgot to check what the temperature was at the end of the mash, so don't know how well it kept its heat, it had a camping mat, a blanket and a thick winter coat as extra insulation, so was probably ok.

Wort:

I ended up with about 20 litres of wort with a gravity of 1050, I diluted this down to my target of 1046.

Looks like your first AG went smoothly enough, the hard bit now is waiting for the outcome ...

I've done kits for quite a while now, and I thought that I'd got used used to waiting to try a brew, but can't wait to try this already!

Nice one fella , no looking back to kits now. The trouble you now have is holding back from constructing a temperature controlled brewery with bigger brewlengths as you soon relise it takes no more time to brew 80ltrs as it does 20.And this means the wife does not moan as much and has no idea how much you are consuming !!!

Good man - looks like a good one. Just wait til you get to drink it. It'll be the most satisfying pint you've ever tasted ;)
