Plan for the weekend AG5+6

Post by jimny14 » Wed Mar 09, 2011 11:28 am

Here's the plan then. Gonna try and get 2 brews done over the weekend with any luck. Also kegging AG4 at some point, so should be a fun weekend.

Fugglecade pale ale.

60 min mash at 67C
estimated OG - 1052 (70% efficiency)

Grainbill
MO 5kg
Caramalt 500g
Wheat malt 200g

Boil 60mins

Northern brewer 10.5% 20g 60 mins
cascade 4.6% 20g 15mins
fuggles 4.3% 20g 15 mins
cascade 4.6% 30g 10 mins
fuggles 4.3% 30g 10 mins
cascade 4.6% 20g 0 mins (20 min steep)
fuggles 4.3% 20g 0 mins (20 min steep)

Yeast - US-05.

Then next will be a wheat beer, not in any way traditional, but its using up stuff that needs to be used,

UK Schneid-huh?
Mash at 65C 60 mins
estimated OG - 10.46 (70% Efficiency)
MO - 2kg
Wheat malt - 2.5kg
Crystal malt - 300g
Caramalt - 300g

Boil 60 mins

Hallertauer hersbrucker 2.3% 70g 60 mins

Yeast - reclaimed schneider weiss (stepping up nicely as we speak) or if that doesn't work out WB-06.

Hopefully this time i'll get the camera out n get a few shots, if all goes well it'll be a very productive weekend.

Looks good - when did you upgrade from extract to AG then?

If you want to come in on co-op bulk buying with TheMumbler and BigStoo and me drop me a PM, saves on postage from Malt miller or thrifty if we bulk order together and means fresher ingredients too!

Hi Steve, ended up only doing a couple of extracts n went on to AG cos I got an offer of an AG setup when I had the spare cash which was handy.

Bulk buying sounds like a plan, Can have a quick chat about it friday when I pop round those demi's for you.

Right then, got the fugglecade brew on at the mo. So as it mashes and I have my lunch thought i'd come on here n put up the first part of the brewday. The recipe is as above,

Obligatory grain shot,

Mash in, got 66 (ish) so thats more than fine by me.

All tucked up, I promised there's a tun in there somewhere

Hops ready to go

Right then, sarnie then sparge, other half of brewday to follow.

If anyone knows any free software I can use to resize images without it putting these annoying watermarks on let me know, cheers.

there is a 'windows power toy' called something like image resizer which is a nice tool that integrated into windows. if you google it you'll find it.

You can then select images, right click > resize images > choose size > done :)

Cheers for that L2wis, much appreciated.

Here's the update from yesterday as the wheat mashes.

First runnings

Last runnings

The boil after 45 mins, with cooler and 15 min addition

Grot and a lots of hops left over

All seemed to go well yesterday, got 23l at 1056 so my efficiency must have gone up a bit. If the US-05 does its thing well this should end up at about 6%, will see where the FG ends up in a couple of weeks :D .

Right on with the wheat, i'll put up a report when I finish it.

Not a problem jimny, i dont know why they didnt put it into windows to start with, its really useful!

The beer is looking good! Hope your wheat one comes out as good as yesterdays. I've really gotta get my second AG underway, need to get the car sorted so i can get to the brewery.

Looking forwards to the next update.

Right so here's the update for the wheat beer. The recipe changed a little thanks to The Mumblers suggestion and the loan of 500g munich :D thanks again. Here's the amended grain bill

2kg marris otter
2.5kg wheat malt
500g munich
100g crystal

All the grain ready to go, (note CAMRA friendly brewing footwear)

Image

So all in to the tun for the mash complete with fluky temperature.

Action shot

Image

Final runnings looking nice

Image

All went smoothly, even if I kept getting interupted by family phone calls, mates coming to steal books and rugby needed watching, so mash took longer than it should have but no big deal.

The schneider weiss starter wort tasted nice, and could definately taste the yeast so I syphoned most of the wort off it (saved in the fridge to get some more yeast [-o< ) and pitched the yeast in to the wort at 18C.

Put it away and crossed my fingers that it would start fermenting ok (first time i've fermented with a reclaimed yeast).

Came back home today to find this

Image

So all is well and I can relax now. Gonna leave it a couple of weeks then batch prime and bottle in to pint bottles :D

Hopefully i'll "check carbonation" a week after bottling n report back.

Only problem is that I realised today that I forgot to take the OG, but using the same efficiency that I got on saturday from the previous brew this should have come out around 1050.
