Brewed last Friday

Post by coatesg » Thu Mar 10, 2011 11:52 pm

I brewed these last Friday but never got round to posting about them. Here goes:

Bitter
===

Maris Otter 3kg
Munich 1.2kg
Crystal 120EBC 200g
Black malt 40g

Mash 67C

Challenger 6.1% 90min 12g
First Gold (home grown) 90min 13g
Challenger 6.1% 15min 12g
First Gold (home grown) 15min 14g
Challenger 6.1% 5min 18g
First Gold (home grown) 5min 18g
Fuggles 0min 3.8% 17g

~26L
OG 1038
Yeast: Hen's Tooth (Morland)
Current gravity (+6 days): ~1008

Janet's Brown Ale
===

Lager malt 6.1kg
Wheat malt 500g
Carapils 630g
Light Crystal 60EBC 630g
Chocolate Malt 255g

Mash 68C

Northern Brewer 9.3% 90min 67g
Northern Brewer 9.3% 15min 33g
Cascade 5.5% 5min 51g
Cascade 5.5% 0min 51g

Dry hop (to follow later): Centennial 10.1% 67g

~26L
OG 1066
Yeast: 2x US-05

Both went reaosnably well, though the run off from the American Brown Ale was a complete nightmare and I had to do some very unseemly things to get it out of the boiler. So much so in that I've been rebuilding my cooler at last and getting the parts to finally start to use my March pump for recirc and boiler emptying - silicone hose arrived yesterday, just a few more solder joints, and a bit of fiddling to get the pump connected to piping...

Well, the better finished very low at 1006, and having just racked it, I'm not really sure what to make of it, but I have a stinking cold and blocked sinuses... I get a few spicy phenols, fruit, some spice, and maybe bubblegum and something of the challenger and first gold. It's an odd beer and to be honest, I'm not entirely sure how it's going to come out, but it has time to mature and clear properly in case those flavours are yeast related. I wonder if it has a funky infection but out doesn't taste *that* bad...

US Brown has finally dropped the yeast head and it's crashing the yeast out as I type...
