Spring is in the air - what a lovely day for brewing!
I'm brewing a session beer with goldings and styrians. I have brewed something similar before from extract - the hops were all I had in store. It turned out an excellent pint, so I have re-worked as an AG recipe.
3600g Pale Malt
150g Crystal Malt
100g Torrefied Wheat
23g Golding @ 90 min
23g Styrian Goldings @ 90 min
10g Golding @ 10 min
10g Styrian Goldings @ 10min
3g Irish Moss @ 10 min
3g Golding @ -5min
3g Styrian Goldings @ -5min
Final Volume: 23 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.040
Final Gravity: 1.009
Alcohol Content: 4% ABV
Total Liquor: 33.5 Litres
Mash Liquor: 9.6 Litres
Mash Efficiency: 80%
Bitterness: 34 EBU
Colour: 13 EBC
wyeast 1469 West Yorkshire Ale
Mashed this morning and boiled over lunch. It's settling now before being transferred to the FV.
Sorry, no pictures today.
AG4 Goldings Spring
Re: AG4 Goldings Spring
OG 1039.4 (temp corrected) - I'm happy with that
Efficiency 78.7% - more than happy
Tasted the wort - lovely
Now the wait...
The only problem was that I did not check the alpha acid of the hops, but used the defaults in the Beer Engine. Goldings were 5.22% (not 5.7%) and Styrians 3.99% (not 4.5%), giving 31 IBU (not 34). However, I am pleased with the taste of the wort, so not really a problem.

Re: AG4 Goldings Spring
ok, I feel a bit selfish for not posting any pictures. So, here is something else .... my brewing schedule for the day. I find that writing the schedule down essential for brewdays. I plan out the ingredients, additives, volumes etc. I tick things off as I go and record lots of things. At the end of the day I transfer the data back into a spreadsheet so I can refer to it in the future.
I assume everyone does something similar ... or am I a bit odd?

Re: AG4 Goldings Spring
I think we are all odd, thats why we are spending out time on a homebrew forum!
(thats why my wife tells me anyway! haha)
I have a geeky Brewlog i complete for each brew, its records all the ingrediants and quantites used, key temps and OG's, plus any mistakes issues etc. It also has a step by step ticklist down the side after forgetting the Irish moss too many times!
Its a good reference point to work out what you did well and what you did badly when you are tasting the beer. So many variables!
Beer looks good, let us know what it tastes like!

Re: AG4 Goldings Spring
thanks, I'm glad I'm not alone. I find it useful when planning a brew, brewing and for reference later.
as for chatting on a homebrew forum - my carer (SWMBO) thinks it is a good thing - better than chatting to the beer
beer is fermenting well. I hope to get it in the barrel on the weekend.

Re: AG4 Goldings Spring
This turned out well again. There was a faint grassy aroma (not unpleasant, but not wanted) for the first few weeks, but that cleared and left a super session beer: light copper colour; bright; medium bitterness; good hop character with pleasant citrus taste. I shall be brewing this again.

Re: AG4 Goldings Spring
I only just saw this thread. You might be relieved to know that I also use spreadsheets to try and hammer some sort of order into a brew day, as well as to record relevant details for analysis later. However, I should probably point out that I am definitely odd, so you probably are too. Sorry about that
That's a nice looking pint by the way.
