Basic party stout and BIS

Post by Spud395 » Wed Apr 13, 2011 9:58 am

Ok, I've a mash on, 2nd brew in a week, thats a record for me.
I went through more than a month that I couldnt brew and now need to replenish stocks of regular beer.

Being Irish you need to have a stout in stock and it's what most none brewers judge you by.
"Jasus his "Guinness" is good" for the most part Guinness and stout are interchangable words.
So much so that all almost all Irish micros make a "Guinness"

It's just a basic stout with a few small tweeks, I wanted 1kg of flaked barley for a nice creamey full boddied mouthfeel, but that's all I had.
I decided to top up to a Kg with oats, but there was 250g in the bag so stuck it all in.
Also stuck in a little crystal, Iwonder will it be lost or will I gat some maltyness from it

Pale Malt 5 EBC 4000 grams 68.1%
Roasted Barley 1350 EBC 565 grams 9.7%
Flaked Barley 0 EBC 860 grams 14.6%
Flaked Oats 0 EBC 250 grams 4.3%
Crystal Malt 130 EBC 200 grams 3.4%

Original Gravity: 1.048
Final Gravity: 1.015
Alcohol Content: 4.3% ABV

Not sure on hops yet untill I look in the freezer, most lightly Target or Magnun.

I've even taken 2 pics

Well that was fun :)
I decided to push the limit of the boiler and go for a long brew.
I ended up with 28 L in a 33L boiler, I topped up as the boil went along.

Then it came time to put it in the FV, no point in putting 28 L in a FV.
So filled it to 24L and pitched wlp005.

To the remaining 4L I added 1/2 kg of DME and stuck it in a DJ with some wyeast1214 belgian abby ale :)
OG 1.090.
I have to give lancsteve and Randy Mosher credit for the inspiration for that one.
Should turn out interesting anyway, I'll bottle in 33cl bottles for Xmas.
Might even add some candi syrup in secondry as it's a kind of a bonus brew :)

I'm re-naming my brewery "The haphazard Brewery", it seems to be my theme tune at the minute!

After 3 pic's today, the battries went :( put in new battries and went to load the pics and the feckin new ones went.
Time for a new camera, but no money for a new camera :)

I ment to say BIS is Belgian Imperial Stout,I think the low level of hopping relative to the OG of this brew will allow some of the belgian fruitiness to shine.

That sounds really tasty, you've just made me want to brew another stout!

I'm intrugued by the BIS too, not come across that before, let us know how it turns out!

I like the idea of splitting the brew actually - I wonder if you could collect a few litres of the first runnings separately and boil them on the stove or something whilst you make the main brew; maybe reduce them down a bit more than normal if needed.. It could make predicting the gravity of the main batch harder, but would save buying extract. Hmm, I can see an experiment coming on here..

Cheers

 Not suprised you never heard of it Kev, I think I might have dreamt it
I think boiling down your 1st runnings is a better way to do this.
It wasnt all together planned, more a vague idea that circumstances alloud happen.
I'd been planning a big stout for a while, but didnt want to go for a full brewlength.

I've discovered I can fit a DJ in my brew freezer with a FV, so splitting a portion of the brew will be a regular thing from now on.
Maybe to try a different yeast or dry hop or some little tweek a bit different from the main brew

Ha ha! Well it sounds good to me, and even if it didn't exist before it does now!

Hmm, this is excellent; one of the main disadvantages of upscaling and brewing less often is the lack of variety, so i'd considered splitting the brew with different hops and yeasts but changing the gravity as well would make even more combinations. The staple brew and a 'desert beer' to follow :)

Bottled the regular stout today.

Had added some candi syrup to the BIS a few days into ferment.
I racked it off the trub and onto 360ml of blueberry syrup today.
I'll bottle in a few weeks and keep for Christmas

Hi Spud365

Glad to hear you able to brew again. I hope you're feeling fully fit now.

Both stout & BIS sound great.
I like the idea of a main brew + a bonus brew.

I normally just do a 5 gal / 23L brew, but my mashing capacity is relatively large at ~49L so I have the capacity to mash more than a 5gal brew.
I'm limited by a 30L boiler, so I like the idea of boiling up 1st runnings separately.

Maybe I could drain 1st runnings from mash into the boiler then do a relatively quick 60 min boil while sparging mash into a temp wort container(FV).
Then drain boiler to (small) FV1 & then refill boiler with sparged wort and boil main brew.

I suppose I should just keep it simple but its more fun to experiment. :)

Cheers John, getting there now, few weeks and it'll be all forgotten :)

It's the 1st time I've done a split like this and it does add an extra dimention.
Also it being a bonus, it seems a bit easier to experiment without the fear of messing up a full brew.
Sounds like a plan you got there.
I'll be keeping an eye on brewday posts :)

Hi Spud365

I'm probably going to leave this to next brew+1 as I'm planning a Belgian Golden Ale based on Floyd's recipe at the weekend.
Belgian Honey Beer (Duvel Yeast)

I've got the Dingemans malt from The Malt Miller, and Duvel Yeast starter doing its stuff, so its all systems go. :D

I'd be pushing it to do an higher % extra brew when the main brew is 1081 OG

ATB John
