AG#3 Jennings Cumberland Ale

Post by rsw » Sat Jun 25, 2011 8:12 pm

Even though I built all the AG kit near xmas this is only my 3rd AG so far - I had a couple of kits to use up and I don't drink that much anyway. All seemed to go well though. Few photos from the day:

The Grist:

The HLT and preheating mash tun.

I was 1 degree too low for my target mash temp - previous times its been too high, perhaps next time i'll get it spot on!

Mash was a little longer than planned as I went out to the shops during the mash, and it took longer than i'd hoped, so it was a 105 minute mash instead, lost a couple of degrees over this time so not too bad.

Sparge went well and for the first time I actually got my expected pre-boil volume.

I went Al Fresco for the boil:

Boil went well and ended up with the clearest wort i've had so far and just over 5 gallons at the expected OG of 1038.

All tidied up and cleared away before the wife came home from work!

Nice one rsw!

You must be a natural. That wort is crystal clear. Cumberland is a nice pint, that's fo sho. Take it it's the GW recipe = challenger / golding combo. Nice! Let us know how it turns out.

The first two I did the wort was quite cloudy, I'm sure I did everything the same, so not sure why this time its crystal clear, luck rather than being a natural probably! It is GW's recipe - looking forward to trying it already.

Only thing is that I'm worried that its a bit too warm at the moment - I'm off to find a suitable container tomorrow to fill with water and stand the fermenter in with an old t-shirt wrapped round.

Hi RSW

Looks like a nice brew day! Good clear wort too, I find if my wort has been clearer since march. I but this down to the longer chilling time needed which allows the hops to settle filtering out the trub etc.

Well thats my theory at least...

I'm planning a Alfresco brewday for tomorrow! An American wheat beer!
Let us know how it turns out and how you efforts at keeping the ferment cool works out
:)

Going by the pics of the graviy it looks nearer 1042 to me. Nice clear wort and one of the brews I was contemplating as I love the stuff.

You're right, I must have been looking at the hydrometer cross eyed or something!
