Brewday 29/04/07 TLC Twist

Post by Wez » Fri Apr 27, 2007 7:43 pm

Right I've come up with this, loosely based on TTL and i'll be brewing on Sunday so I thought i'd post it tonight to get some feedback.

TLC-Twist
Mash 90 mins at 66 degrees
Batch Size: 25.00 L
Boil Time: 90 min
5.1 kg Pale Malt (MO) (5.9 EBC) Grain 99 %
50g Crystal Malt Grain 1 %
90.00 gm Styrian Goldings [2.00%] (90 min) Hops 19.5 IBU
30.00 gm Fuggles [4.90%] (90 min) Hops 15.1 IBU
25.00 gm Styrian Goldings [2.00%] (15 min) Hops 2.6 IBU
25.00 gm Styrian Goldings [2.00%] (put in when boiler turned off)
1.00 tsp Irish Moss (Boil 15.0 min) Misc

EBU = 35

The styrians I have are a very low AA (2.0%) so I've got to use loads of them.

What do you think?

Looks like a good'n. One thing I would watch is that Wheeler uses an 85% efficiency rating in his recipes. Not sure what you achieve but you may end up with a beer a little lower in gravity than expected.

I also have a general TTL point to make. I had a few pints of TTL the other week in a pub in Edinburgh and it didn't look like an all pale malt beer to me. It looked like it had a drop of crystal in it.

Cheers Callum, running an average 73% eff hoping for something around 4% so it's a quaffer 4660g should give me that, might throw some crystal in though, good suggestion. Cheers. BTW your XLS is good work!

That would give about 3.8%. Good quaffing indeed. :D

My impression of the TTL was that is was just a dash of crystal to give a little extra colour and body (perhaps only 50g for the 25 litres). Others may have an opinion.
BTW your XLS is good work!
Thanks for the compliment. I've certainly found it useful as a tool to try and understand my beers a bit better. Cheers

I'll let you know how i get on.

With regard to the XLS, it helped me understand VLOOKUP a lot more. Was going to buy BeerSmith but you've saved me a few quid

I bought Beersmith this week. With the £/$ rate as it is currently then it's a bargain :D Great s/w also so the author deserves the $$$

True....but Calums XLS works really well. I may end up splashing the tenner at some point but hats off to Calum for his work the calcs are really well thought out and the lad lets you have it if you PM him.

Mash started at 07:25 66 degrees.

I've upped the grain bill a little to 5.1kg pale and 50g crystal.

Time for some breakfast and an hour in front of CBeebies with mini Wez who's just got up. :D

All done, just need to pitch the yeast.

After the boil I had collected 19L so i added water to the hops in the boiler and ran this into the FV to top up to 25L rinsing the hops. Ended up with 25L @ 1046 which is about what i'd targetted (1045) so quite pleased with that. :D

Looking forward to seeing how this one tastes but it'll have to wait i've got half a keg of Fixby Gold (my last kit) a full keg of Wezerection and a full keg of Crowd Pleaser to get through first and Mrs Wez has just OK'd another brewday next Sunday, might do another Wezerection, the samplers i've had of this are fantastic. \:D/

There is a deal involved....I get up at 6am with Mini Wez and brew around Cbeebies duties while Mrs Wez has a lie in and then during the slack time (boil etc) I do the heavy duty house chores (she's pregnant and can't get them done herself)

I don't mind it's all about give and take :D
