Near perfect brewday.

Post by simco999 » Sat Oct 22, 2011 6:59 pm

Well today was the nearest to perfection I have ever come.

AG#24 - Challenger and Hallertauer Mittelfrühe Weiss.

Its a Weiss - no surprises there.

2kg Lager malt.
3.5 kg Wheat malt.

30g Challenger at 60 mins
40g Hallertauer Mittelfrühe at 15 mins
30g HM at flame out (switch off - lekky)

Whirlpooled the hops after switch off.

Yeast - recovered WLP300 from last brew.

OG 1055 ish

Hit all my temps and all my vols.

As John Cleese said about his Monty Python colleagues - I'm suffering from delusions of competence.

23.5 liters in the FV. Sitting back with a pint - very happy.

Also bottled my 1st Amarillo Weiss - made to PDTNC's recipe - bloody lovely - If its half as good as Ade's I'll be very happy.

Amarillo weiss part two in my second FV - oh happy day.

Congratulations on your success, I'm dead jealous, I can understand your elation. :)

Sometimes I think I am getting close to a trouble free round but something always seems to go wrong, it seems so far away sometimes.

One step at a time though, I will be happy not to have to go to the shops halfway through for something that breaks, that will be a milestone for me. LOL.

Believe me - everything that could go wrong has done.

Smashed hydrometer
Forgot to put in hop strainer
Too little water
Infection
Forgot campden tabs
etc etc

Nice when it all comes together

Smashed hydrometer <CHECK>
Forgot to put in hop strainer<CHECK MASH TUN AND BOILER>
Too little water<CHECK>
Infection<CHECK>
Forgot campden tabs<CHECK>
etc etc

Nice when it all comes together
Add to the above
Numerous stuck mash (empty MT and try to start again, 14 kilo once)
Jubilee clip breaking on chiller hose(shop again, 3 shops actually)
Forgot protofloc
Dropped hop sack into wort, "up to the elbows for that one when it cooled down enough"
yeast under pitched a couple o times
run out of gas half way through the boil (twice)

I surprise myself I get anything to drink sometimes.

It's great when you get one of those "perfect" brewdays isn't it :)

Hop strainer came off during boil yesterday. Would have probably been OK but I dud a big IPA and there were lots and lots of hops...

Nice going, most of my brewdays are easy... its only when I have distractions and alcohol that things start to slip! :D

Can I add:

Post-boil: wort dropped to 80c so I could add post boil hops and realised just as I was about to addthem that I hadn't put my chiller in at -15 minutes. So had to bring it back to the boil, add the chiller and boil for another 15 minutes. I swear with darkness falling and the ambient temperature dropping it added another hour to my brew day.
