IN THE SHED 31ST MARCH 2012 ( EURO-SMIFF )

Hello,
long time no post.
Today I brew and decide to share on JBK unlike some of my other Brew days lately.

Grains:
8 Kg Lager Malt
1 kg Micronised Corn
500g Cara Gold
400g Torry wheat

Hops:
15g Sorachi Ace @ 90min

50g Aramis @ 30min

50g Aramis @ 15min

100g Aramis @ FO

RIMS:
90mins @ 66º
Mash out at 75º

1062 in the fermenters

Yeast:
Diamond Lager Yeast Starter

Plan to ferment Slow and Low in the Cooled Incubator

Sounds interesting.

What's Aramis hops? What are the like? never heard of them before.

Looks good Gary, the Bristol beer factory beer I drank when we were at Chelmsford that used Sorschi Ace hops was probably the best one I tried that night.

The Ace I have used before they have a Pithy lemon bite to them.

The Aramis are new on me but I see this Blog ,

“WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15, 2011 The Aramis hop is a brand new hop variety from Cophoudal in Alsace, France. Its parentage includes the Strisselspalt hop, a German style hop from Alsace. Strisselspalt has a very unique aroma-herbal like a German noble hop, but with hints of lemon as well, but it also has a very low alpha acid content, which makes it tough for using in craft ales. Aramis was at 8% alpha acids, so a really nice level"

Think my batch is 8.9% but they are all being used as F & A hops.

I cant pin down the smell just yet but that said "Pine" springs to mind but its very subtle. Ill go and have another head in the Copper moment as I'm letting them steep for a bit.

Looking good Gary, interesting actical on cold sparging.

Did you preserver with the hop filter idea?

Funny thing happened today, I was so interested in getting the wort into the copper I did not attach the hop filter and had to pump it out into the HLT , I then just added my hop filter insert with a Copper scrubby around the inlet holes and it work like a charm, but I did run the whirlpool and run off with caution.
But defo not giving up on the Idea.

FYI
my Hop filter insert is a C shaped Copper tube with a end cap and a small slot cut in its base between the end cap and the 1st Bend upwards, it is joined via a small bit of silicon hose to the back of the Ball valve at the top of the C shape and the Scrubby wrapped around the base, worked very well with 215g of hops I thought.

Great lesson learnt with this brew, 66º is far to high, too much body but here is the lesson. I decided to dilute half a glass down, then some more then some more, then BINGO Euro Fizz without being thin and tasteless.
I expect I can dig up some nice stats about higher gravity brewing and the mash temps used by the big boy brewers as I expect this is what they do to save space.

I will do this again but with more IBU and dilute with carbonated spring water to stop too much o2 getting in.just need to run a few dilution experiments with the small amount of ( EURO-SMIFF ) I have left then its happy summer drinking.
