Double Brewday - Monday 28 May (Grumpy & Stunner)

To keep up with supply and demand I am going to do a double brewday tomorrow, 2x 25L batches. (Thanks for being so understanding Mrs Wez!) :D

Both the recipies below are for 25L calculated at 75% efficiency.

Grumpy Bum Target OG 1041 EBU 40
4130gm Pale Malt (MO) Grain 91%
410gm Crystal Malt 9%
80gm Fuggles [AA 4.90%] (90 min) 40.2 IBU
25gm Styrian Goldings [AA 2.00%] (15 min)

Styrian Stunner Target OG 1043 EBU 43
4750gm Pale Malt (MO) 100%
46gm Challenger [AA 6.80%] (90 min) 31.6 IBU
42gm Styrian Goldings [AA 2.00%] (90 min) 8.5 IBU
30gm Styrian Goldings [AA 2.00%] (15 min) 3.1 IBU
45.00 gm Styrian Goldings [2.00%] (0 min) (At Power Off for 1hr)
15.00 gm Styrian Goldings [2.00%] (Dry Hop In Cask)

Thanks to Vossy1 & SteveD for the Stunner recipie got it from one some of their threads.

As usual i'll be starting the 1st at 6am and hoping to start the second at 1pm.

Comments & suggestions for recipie alterations as ever very welcome and of course wish me luck! 8)

I'm not familiar with your setup Wez but couldn't you have both brews on the go at the same time ? i.e. mashing the second while the first is boiling ? Much better use of time rather than doing each sequentially....

I may open a hombrew shop next to your house. Your output is staggering (probably literally). Although Vossy seems to be catching up of late.

Enjoy the double brew day.

I think Andy has a nice idea about working two brews at once.

Hmmm, I only have one boiler but I guess if I did a 2hr mash on the 2nd it would work, any problems with that?

Hmmm, I only have one boiler but I guess if I did a 2hr mash on the 2nd it would work, any problems with that?
Actually thinking about this more with the boiler in use for batch #1 for 3 hours (30 mins to come to rolling boil, 90 min boil, 1 hour to settle and cool) I don't think it can be done with one boiler - tell me please if i'm wrong as it would save loads of time!

Wez, I've done a doubler a while back, it was quite enjoyable, I overlapped them like Andy suggested. It's not that hectic and gets two done with only the mess and hassle of one, you've just got to remember to have hot water ready all the time for doughing and the sparge.

I only have one boiler, one HLT and on MT, but I guess you must use your boiler to mash in or something.

Anyway, have a good one what ever you do, don't forget the piccies.

No I mash in a mash tun, what i cant get my head around is i'll kick the boil off (in the boiler, obviously) but then i've got no way to heat water to sparge as the boiler is in use.....am i being a dork?

No, you're right, sorry I didn't realise, it would only work if you had a seperate HLT,

get yersel a cheap bucket that can withstand near boiling temps, bang a cheap T***o kettle element and add a tap, there you go, one cheap HLT, makes brewing life so much simpler

(or two elements for a quick heat up, great for those spur-of-the-mo brews)

I can feel an upgrade coming on, too late for tomorrow, looks like it'll be a marathon brew day (6am to 7pm) , might even need a drink at the end of it. :roll: :wink: :lol:

well, with all this talk of beer making, although I wasn't planning it, I feel a brew tomorrow coming on......

All prepped now for batch one, Grumpy Bum, Marris Otter and Crystal weighed out, boiler sat with Mash Liquor waiting for the 6am switch on :)

I bet your arm hurts from all that twisting! I look forward to a post for your brew (with pic's)

The last double brew day I did felt like an epic. 6am-6pm. I did end up with three beers though as one of the brews was a 40L batch that I split - I fermented one with a lager yeast in the fridge and the other I fermented with Gervin and then added Cherry concentrate to it.
