Truck Crash

Post by trucker5774 » Sun Jun 03, 2012 12:46 pm

Well guys (and Shortie) It's been about a year since my last brew at home. I blew the dust off the kit and jumped in with both feet and no planning. I thought what the hell.......I've done enough of them....what could go wrong?

Yes there's a reason I've called it Truck Crash! It's early stages yet but the first thing is my digital thermometer has died so my only spare is a lazer. It's more of a guide than a dirty elbow.

This isn't going to be a fancy write up and there certainly won't be any pictures. I can't be trusted with a thermometer, what chance do I have with a camera?

The mash is on, somewhere between 64 and 69C. There's about 4300g of pale malt and 50g of black malt (why not?)

The boiler works, or at least it did when heating the strike water for the mash. Fingers crossed it holds up.

There will be some hops going in. Probably 'C' hops of whatever type I have when I go and look. Is this all sounding a bit hap hazard? Well it was sit in feeling bored, go and see my horse in the rain or JUST DO IT! I better have a look for one of those FV thingies and get some bleach out. I hope there is some dried yeast in the fridge as I obviously haven't made a starter. I guess it will be beer of some description, but what style, who knows. Maybe I've invented one.

More in a while.................

Thanks, Kev. It's a bit like putting on an old pair of slippers!

I had a slightly stuck mash but easily sorted. At the moment I'm not overly bothered what it turns out like. The malt is way past it's best but everything else should be OK yeast may be a bit suspect........what I'm saying is, I should have just eaten the hops

Steeping now. Fed the spent grains to the sheep and about to turn the chiller back on.

Looking forward to the first taste of this one in about 10 days :=P

Careful how you word that sentence. The internet police might take that the wrong way.

Just about to drain to the FV. The O.G. is 1054. Anticipating a F.G. around 1010 so it's going to be heading towards 6% ABV. Cant decide whether to dilute it or just have a strong one for a change.

It's been a difficult time. Started with a burst pipe in the new house, which lead to shitty insurance builders and temporary accommodation for nearly 5 months. To top it all I have gone through a split up with my partner of 6 years and my mum died too............sorry you asked now

Looks like things are on the up again, apart from my horse squashing a 4x4 a few weeks back

I see what you mean about the planning, that way there is no pressure to Hit this temp that volume that beer style the way I like to do it. :D :D :D :D

Good to see your back brewing.
