#AG30 Northdown (own hops)

Hi All made this brew today, kept it simple to highlight the hops, fresh from the bine

4500 golden promise
300 caramalt
300 wheat malt

picked 216 g hops, so chucked two thirds in for a 60 min boil, and the rest at 5 mins. ( I thought it best to make sure all the hops had at least a short boil rather than steep only, as not sure what bugs are lurking there!)

Blissfully unaware

boiling, miscalculated water, green hops dont absorb like dried ones D'oh!

If this was in focus it would read 1044, bit low but I did get 25l

Yeah it sounds a lot, but green hops contain lots of moisture, and I'm led to believe that the equivalent in dried hops is about 25% by weight. The AA% is a bit of an unknown tho, the wort tasted ok from the hydrometer jar, I'll report back. :)

Nice one far9410!! I'd love to grow my own hops but I'm not sure I have the space. Was that your total crop 216g? If so how many bines, how old are the bines and how high did they grow? I've been wondering if I could grow them up the side and across the roof of my shed? I know they like to grow quite high so maybe not.

What made you pick Northdown or do you grow other varieties as well? I'm not sure if I had to pick one hop that'd be my choice to grow.

Hi, I have one bine, it grows up one side of the garage and across the roof, I could have collected a few more but got all the best ones . I picked northdown cos its multi purpose and was my fave at the time , it makes brewing a bit less scientific but more fun I think

So I could maybe get away with growing them up my shed! Id be interested to hear if it tastes any different or fresher to vac packed hops.

I've got about 1.1kg of Frozen green Hops from my Fuggle & Challenger, I plan to throw them all in at the end of boil too with a short boil. I'll probably have to defrost them overnight beforehand to save killing the boil.

Hope it turns out well :)

Kegged/bottled last night, hada taste, bit of diacetyl there, will this fade? Hops a bit underwhelming, I think next time ill use a conventional bittering hop then bung all the green uns in late. :)

Will be interested in how this turns out.

I got some Goldings off my mates hop plant, but I've dried them all now - but would like to use fresh in a brew next year.

As you suggested earlier the unknown AA% is a bit of an issue.
In general when using my home-grown hops I split the bittering addition between home-grown hops and commercial hops of known AA%, that way I feel I have a fair chance of coming somewhere close to the expected bitterness levels.
But adding them all late is also a good idea since the aim then is for flavour/aroma and not bitterness.
