Brewday 15/16 June 07 - PCR brew

Post by Bigster » Fri Jun 15, 2007 11:06 pm

Having attended a funeral today of a relative , known to all his pals as PCR , decided I would name this brew in his honour.

The recipe is from Marc Ollossons great book, RATHB, that postie dopped through my letterbox today :D

Just in case anyone on JHBF hasnt got a copy already  listed is the original recipe with my amendments ,due to what gear I had and time constraints meaning another overnight mash, in brackets

Parish Special Bitter

OG 1038 [1050]
Mash Liquor 11 litres
FG 1010
Mash Temp 65c ( 68c to allow for overnight)
Alc content 3.6% [5.0]
Mash Time 90 mins ( 8 hours)
Bittering Units 30
Boil Time 2 hours ( 90 mins)
Final Vol 23 Litres

In the Tun
Marris Otter 3880g
Wheat Malt 215g ( only had 190g)
Crystal Malt 215g

In the boiler

Full Boil Goldings 4% 94g (6% 60g )
Last 15 Goldings 20g
Irish Moss

Will be using Safale 04

Mash started at 22:00 - should be sparging by 6:30

Dry hopped 15g Goldings 25/06/07 when kegging

This ale will be coming down with me , leroy and our missuses to a cottage in Pembrokeshire next month in case no decent ale houses nearby. Hope its good after my recent shenanigans [-o<

Question on the wheat malt - put it in the blender so almost powder. Guess this is OK as this is more for flavour than any sugary goodness :?:

All was good on the mashing and taste front apart from my trying to oxidise it later in the process. Still tasting good although a little cloudy so may have gotten away with it

Have a good one bigster.

I never rated wheat beers like Erdinger and Fiddlers elbow much and tended to avoid them where possible as they always seemed a bit chewy and over earthy.

Imagine the look on my face when I realised my favourite summer beer was a wheat beer  (Acorn Summer Pale)

Keep up the good work Bigster - I'm brewing the styrian stunner from the same book!
