First batch sparge soon

Post by Scooby » Thu Jun 28, 2007 12:46 pm

The cornie arrive from Norm yesterday so hope to do a brew with a batch sparge soon, btw Norm really excelled himself this time. I think it may be one Vossy rejected because it didn’t meet his required standard of shininess

Of course it have been because I mentioned Andy’s name :=P

Recipe is

4.9kg pale malt
150g crystal

50g SS Goldings 3.8AA all of boil
40g Fuggles 5.0AA all of boil
20g Goldings 5.5AA last 15min
15g Goldings 5.5AA in hop back
S04 yeast.

Mash will be 3hs+ at 68c and boil 90min. Estimated Eff 70%

OG 1.042 FG 1.011 IBU 35 EBC 12.8

Just to check I’ve got it right here are my figures,

To collect 22l in fv with 12%/hr lost through evaporation and 3l to trub I need 30.5l at start of boil.

2 sparges at 15.25l each, with a dead space of 1l and 5.05l absorbed I need to add 7.3l to the 14l mash and run off. Then just add 15.25l for the second sparge. :)

Excellent calculator DaaB 8)

Good job it wasn't windy as it would have blown away

No, but he did say this one was like new. Needed a soak in PBW but it's perfect inside, no smell of soda at all not even on the 'O' rings. I think it may have been used for beer as the dip tube was shortened

This is brew tent MKI I am now brewing in brew tent MkII. Al fresco brewing is better than trying AG brewing in the tiny kitchen we have!

There's a joke here, something to do with excessive beer consumption & erection problems but it's too easy

This one was shinny but my other was in just as good nick overall. Not sure what Ian's are like but Norm will sort out any problems if you get a duff one. He has sold hundreds and a 100+ on ebay speaks for it's self

Sort of, I was short by 2.5l in the boiler I think it was in the first batch, I measured the final runnings at 1.019 but not the gravity in the boiler. I topped up to 30.5l and ended up with 20.5l instead of 22l in the fv, the gravity was 1.052 so diluted to 1.042 and have got a few litres in the freezer.

I think I cocked up the efficiency calcs when making the recipe #-o 70% efficiency which is what I used would give me 1.050 it looks like I got 72%

It was a little quicker than fly sparging but time is something I'm not really worried about.

I'll give it another try in my next brew but as to whether it's the future and the way to go as some have said only time and sinking a few pints of this brew will tell

Cheers Daab that makes sense. I only took the reading out of inquisitiveness

Apart from getting the amount of grain wrong for a 70% efficiency, I reckon my evaporation rate is 15% not 12% as I thought, that or I lose more to the hops. Either way I need more in the boiler. With this experience it should be easier to adjust for next time.
