The gifthorse lincat boiler as HLT..it has limitations but decent temp control

The converted mash tun and bread basket bottom falsie, manifold was there but now just slight incline towards scrunchie filtered run off tap...a work in progress!!

Point is as Lord Groan will soon attest, shiny is good
"Urban Ghetto" can still get job done
Total cost of kit around 50 squid i reckon..most of which was on stupid compression fittings

Gets the job done, right? Presumably, you're making and drinking decent beer, upgrading here and there as you go. I'm all for keeping the "obstacles to entry" as low as possible.

Not at all.

It's very satisfying creating something out of bits and bobs that you've cobbled together yourself.

It doesn't have to be innovative... it just needs to work.

Then when it produces good beer as well...

Hi.

Mind if I ask what you replaced the Baby Burco tap with?
I've removed my old threaded type tap which always got gummed up and I'm left with an inch hole, I think!

Managed with some persuasion to fit a tank connector there..after I filed out the small ridge inside. There's a few threads on forum about it,but was mostly trial and error..hence little bitch about compression joints!!

It's always nice to see a DIY setup, I've got too many thumbs to make that sort of thing.

BUT I would advice you to get some silicone hose, garden hose is not food safe and it might deposit some nasty things in your beer.
Just try letting some water sit in a hose for a couple of hours and tasting it, it is really foul.

Yeah mate. Is a priority in my to do list. For time being not doing three vessel so no prob there. Next couple of brews will be full volume mash and sparge in the burco. At this stage as I am happy just to get a beer for my efforts,efficiency and hitting targets isn't a priority

I hate it when I see posts asking for advise about a rig they are going to build in 6 months time then a few months later do a 1 gallon test brew then maybe a 2 gallon etc.

So well done to you mate.
Do it on the cheap, Use what you have, Build what you can, But most of all - Get brewing.

Definitely no piss take from here. There's nothing I like better than seeing a bit of recycling in action. With no offence to those lucky souls that can afford the full shiny, nothing beats the satisfaction of getting your 1st ag brew out of, literally a pile of (repurposed) rubbish.
(But I will admit I do want a shiny set up)
After AG1 last weekend I've been impatiently watching my fermentation proceed, having a sniff of the brew every night when I get in from work.

well didnt quite do full mash and boil on current brew in burco..just cut out the lincat until i complete the Work In Progress on it and used the old faithful ss 15 litre pot to provide mash and sparge liquor

Good post - shiny is over-rated.

The only shiny bits in my setup are the heating elements (but only when I clean them) and the caps on the bottles. I did buy a Cornie just to see what all the fuss was about, but I've only used it a couple of times. It seemed like a lot of hassle. I'm only hanging on to it because I think it might make a good CO2 generator (when I eventually get around to that project ).

Here's what I did with my Baby Burco. Blocked the tap off completely and fitted a new bottom draining 1" ball valve via a tank connector.
