Grain shot:
A nice bit of carrot cake for breakfast. I do like a nice bit of home-made birthday carrot cake.
As part of my efforts to simplify my setup, I'm standardising on the outlets of the HLT, mash tun and boiler - basically a couple of inches of 15mm copper pipe. The downpipe is attached with a push-fit right angle, either a normal 15mm one for quick draining or longer with a reducer to help with syphoning. They are interchangeable as needed.
Here's a dull picture of the hops. I should have taken the shot before I put them in bags.
Now that I've finally got round to making the stainless boiler, I've got a proper 3-tier system. This is the sparge, batch sparging as usual.
The manifold MT filter worked well. It gave a nice strong flow with no hint of sticking. It didn't seem to clear the wort as well as the old false bottom did, even cycling the first 10 litres or so, but it kept most of the lumps out and was lovely and easy to assemble, take apart and clean.
First runnings:
I almost snapped in half when I lifted it on to the table. I need to get a scissor lift. The wort was getting perilously close to the top of the boiler, so I had to turn the power down a bit until some of it had boiled off.
Time for a swift drinky from the last batch. Well, it was almost lunchtime.
Sploshing her out into the FV.
It came out at 1.048, which is a bit under what it was supposed to be. That was because the I normally get better efficiency with an overnight mash, whereas this time it only had 90 minutes.
The final result - nice and clear with 1/2 a tab of Protofloc, but with loads if tiny bits floating around. Tasted nice though.
