brew day No 2 at torchwood

Post by torchwood brewery » Sat Jul 14, 2007 1:29 am

well chaps and chapasses

i kegged up the first brew this week and i must say it is looking good and smellin' fine and tastes ok even though its a bit flat and green at the moment.

well i am now hooked on this all grain gig as it is the best way IMHO to make great beer .

my next brew is this week end 15/7/07 at torchwood doe in at 9.30 i am showing a mate of mine using his equipment as he has the same gear as most of you lads but has never used it in 6 years sinse he bought it .

so he asked me to lend a hand he has read the books but as he lives in the bush he don't got internet. so i offered to help him and hone my skills as well and brew day with a friend is better than on your own too.

so sunday is the day and jims bitter is the brew (not old pumpy which i last made)

i will let you know how we went later on in the thread.

buy for now richard :D

Keep us posted Richard, hope all goes well.

I am having a mate over next weekend to do a brew together, it's a good excuse to have a few beers in the garden whilst the Mrs is away on a hen weekend.

well lads it was a screeming sucsess my friend bought over his mash tun and we used that instead of mine as he wanted to see his in action .

we did find that it was a bit small for the job of batch sparging so we had to do two batch rinses .hay but that was fine .

we hit target at preboil and we hit target at post boil as well

gravity was spot on  and the whole job was done cleaned and cleared in 41/2 hours

thats the plate chiller chops time by 30 mins and when you have a friend to help with the cleaning well what more could you ask for .

we were suppin' a nice pale ale along the way and we tasted my "MOUNT REMARKABLE AMBER ALE" its my brew for the mount remarkable agricultural show in September . and it was *#@#*ING fantastic well that wasn't my comment .

anyway lads in all the orgasmic excitement of showing off the kit and doing the brew and talking beer i forgot about charging the digi camera

and John forgot to put his in the car

so it was a pic free session bugger

so apologies there but the day was a good one the sun was shining and the ale was flowing and even mrs torchwood cooked Pizza

now that is a first Mrs Torchwood cooking pizza on brew day if she dose it again then i know she loves me ??? or wants the credit card again

 richard

well it is fermenting away nicely now i will put her into secondary on thursday
for seven days and then bottel up should be ready 28 days to start suppin' after that.

this one is a jims basic bitter around 27 IBU more of a malty ale and balanced than hop head utopia .the hops used in this baby was 4og fuggels+10g challenger@ 90 min then 40g of challenger at flame out for aroma .
i also used wyeast 1098 brit ale as well didn't make a starter reused 400mls of slurry from last brew i saved
what do you recon?

thanks richard

ok
vossey1 i am convinced will just leave it to do its thing 14 days tops no secondary just an all in one ferment to get those esters in of fruit .
no i used wyeast 1098 english ale wet starter 400 mls slurry fresh from the fridge it smells great and is looking nice so i wont play with it .

i want to try a spitfire next but i have searched the site for a dead set recipe to no avail DO YOU HAVE ONE THATS CLOSE?

i got some real nice gear from shepard neame last week and a car sticker that says "SPITFIRE NO FOKKER COME CLOSE"

LOVE IT you brits know how to advertise.

if i put that up in my shop i would have the equal oppertunitys groups and the police come to take it down .Aussies are so anal at times they just don't have a sense of humour. i tink it come down to breading

anyway thanks for the input i got a bit side traked there

english ale rule IMO
