Brewday 21st

Post by Belto » Fri Jul 20, 2007 8:05 pm

Decided on a Longer brew Length + 60% of the Barley Bottom's
Bitter & Twisted

I would like confirmation of the following

Don' have any Fuggles so replacing with Golding's.

Recipe calls for last 15mins Styrian Hops.

I am going to try my new Hop back so do I not add the Styrians but place them in the hop back prior to cooling :?:
Hope for a better extract from the hops

A hop-back I read can be similar to dry hopping, additions in the last 5minutes of the boil or better still steeping at flame out for 15-30minutes. Depends on what this particular beers like (as I don't know) but from taste I'd keep the 15minutes addition and still use some in the hop back. Not too many though as I've had some pretty fragrant and flavoursome 15minute additions with styrians. Having said that I don't know what quantity your using, I used 50g in a 23L brew with strong results :)

Bitter & Twisted

4.8kg Maris Otter
320grm Crystal Malt
320grms Flaked Barley
320grms Torriefied Wheat

96grms Golding
48 Styrian

7grms Irish Moss
Safale 04 Yeast

Is a Hop back necessary or superior
Can it be compared to late hopping
ie 15mins boil or at flame out for 30 mins

Not necessary as great ales can be made without one but from what I've seen posted on the forum they add another dimension to ales which can't be gotten easily without one

If you can I'd certainly try it
