Haven't done a brew for about a month now so planning this for tomorrow as I realised I still haven't done a straightforward English Bitter, probably bottling this lot for the late autumn, not sure this may be Jim's own recipe
any thoughts or improvements?
and which yeast do you reckon? I have S-04 or Nottingham
Standard English Bitter
OG 1039
22.5 litres
42 IBU 15.8 EBC
3.7kg Pale Malt
250g Crystal Malt
Mash liquor 10.5 litres
Mash Temp 67°C
Mash Time 90 mins
Fuggles 4% 30g 90 mins
Challenger 8% 20g 90 mins
Fuggles 5g 15 mins
Boil Time 90 mins

Looks like a tasty brew to me although I might back off a tad on the IBUs for a 1.039OG bitter. Have fun with the brewing. Cheers!

cheers lads,
BE, I reckon you're right, the guidelines in Promash give 40IBU as the very max for that type of brew so maybe a few grams less of the two bitterness hops will do better

Looks good, I think Jim's is much lower IBU wise.
I know which yeast Steve F would tell you to use!
Might be a nice beer to split and try both yeasts.
I would probably go S-04 unless you really want to focus on the hop/malt rather than yeast.
Enjoy!

ok the HLT is heating up, malt has been weighed out and it's coffee time, nice
after the advice on the IBU's, I went with:-
90 min Challenger 16g 14.2 IBU
90 min Fuggle 25g 15 IBU
15 min Fuggle 10g 1.6IBU
gives a good sounding 31 IBUs
will probably use Nottingham, I have only one S-04 and I'm going use it on another stout next week, I reckon the cleaner/neutral taste will be better in a bitter.

aye, I know RTD!!
The reason is that I'm sick of running into mid-afternoon with brews,
it wastes the rest of the day when you could be doing something else, planning to be finished and cleaned up before 1pm (hopefully)
it's a proper glorious sunny day round here so it would be a pity to waste it

I totally agree with you about the late-ish finishes, I should follow your lead & start early but I'm such a lazy s*d

You can't beat an early start / early finish, nice one Garth, have a good day

I would imaging you've got the boil started now

I get a normal brew day over and done pretty quick. A typical day would take about 6 hours from turning on the water to having everything clean and tidy again. Mine usually run from 8am to 2pm-ish.
