Oat Malt Stout

Post by Hanglow » Sat Sep 05, 2015 3:28 pm

Loosely based on Maclays Oat Malt Stout from 1909. I dispensed with the liquorice and linseed but did do a small 5l batch as well as the main one with chilli, coriander and coffee

recipe -although I collected more wort and made the invert from demerara

hmmm, grains

first runnings with first addition of hops

15min additions

New boiler, bazooker filter did not work. Will have to rethink that

the one with chilli/coriander/coffee etc

pitched some yeast I harvested a month or so ago which I woke up with a 1.2l starter last night, shaken not stirred method.

ahh bollocks, just realised I pitched the second admiral at 15 instead of 5

shouldn't make it too much more bitter

Another wildly successful thread by me :)

I bottled both of these today. Tasted very smooth indeed, can't wait until they are conditioned. Finished at 1.011 so knocking on 6%

for the one with chilli and coriander I steeped coffee and orange/lime peel in the priming solution to give it an extra couple of elements. Should make a nice winter spiced stout

I'm a big stout fan and this looks interesting. I'll have to try that when I have some beers drunk.
