Brewday - 16/09/07 - PoPs Stout

Post by Garth » Sun Sep 16, 2007 12:57 pm

Another PoP's stout to go with the Bitter for the house warming party we should be having in a month or so, we move in two weeks. wahey.......

Was originally planning a EB stout, but had a horrible discovery in my one of my flaked barley containers, at the bottom it was all brown and bitty, and smelt rotten, like a farmyard smell, so that got binned and left me only half the flaked barleyI needed, so Pops it was as it uses approx. half the amount. The only thing I can think of is the container wasn't completely dry when I put the barley in there, that and it is quite old.

25Litre OG 1073
Efficiency 70%
IBU 66
EBC 161

Pale 5.43kg
Crystal 1.1kg
Flaked Barley 540g
Roast Barley 540g
Chcoclate malt 330g
Carapils 540g
Black malt 270g

Northdown 77g 60mins

Yeast, going to use up a packet of S-33 with a packet of S-04 as I only have one of each, will this cause problems, or will they work side by side?

as you can see the mash tun just got it all in.....

Cheers db

err.. I was planning on my usual 2.5 litres per kg, but with a grain bill of 8.75kg I don't know whether I got it or not, I just filled it till it was easily stirrable.....

any idea about mixing two yeasts? S-33 and S-04?

done and dusted by 17.15, not a bad day

still didn't hit the expected OG 1073 with this one , but it's better than my previous attempts at this particular recipe, got 1069, so 4 pts short

a lot of the malts etc needed using up so that may be to blame

didn't have two packets of S-04 so I used 1 pack of S-04 and a pack of S-33, I hope they won't fight in there....

yep, loads quicker than spinny jobbie, I would have been into 6hrs + if I'd gone down that route

I've seen me have 7 hour brewdays before.

Hello Garth, hope the brew is progressing well. I did a POP's stout two weeks ago, I only managed 1060. Pitched S04, it fermented nicely down to 1030 and then promptly stuck. All my efforts of pitching another yeast, gentle rousing and yeast nutrient have failed. :( Hope you have better results, I now have a very sweet stout at about 4%.

Hey JB, well it looks like it's finished after the ususal crazy vigourous fermentation for a couple of days.

Sorry to hear that yours failed to get down to expected FG. I pitched two packets, one S-04 and one S-33 that needed using up. Maybe you need to pitch two next time, the yeast might be knackered after a bit.

Looking back over my beerlog for this recipe I've had a 1062 to 1020, and a 1057 to 1016,

using the Batch sparge technique this time got me 1069, so there, proof in the pudding, for me batch sparging returns better efficiency than spinny.

I must be thick, I always use a fermenter that's really too small for the job,

and yes AT, that was quite a cleanup job, which had to be done twice as well,

it's around the 1025 mark, should be a lot lower by now, I wonder if a lot of the yeast got blown out the top, there's very little muck at the bottom as you can see through the fermenter....
