brew night 18/09 - porter

Post by mb » Tue Sep 18, 2007 9:38 pm

evening all,

got out of work unexpectedly early so thought i'd try a night time brew,

all grain #4 whitbread castle eden porter scaled down from graham wheeler's brew classic european beers at home,

5L
pale malt 1200g
chocolate malt 200g
fuggles 20g start of boil (recipe is goldings, but i've only got fuggles- they shouldn't be out of place in a porter).

20 mins of boil left, mini-flying starter made- it does get smoother with each brew (famous last words.....?)

first runnings -

it was the nicest looking wort i've made to date

but, i forgot the pinch of irish moss towards the end of the boil- so compared to previous brews there was hardly any break material. as it's a dark beer it doesn't really matter if it's cloudy, but do you reckon it's going to taste off?

it was quite an odd boil too, much more vigorous than on my previous attempts. OG was 1040, target was 1052 so miles off on that - i suspect i over sparged.

so, learning brew by brew, still plenty of room for improvement :)
