AG#07 (FourBrewFeb) - 60 Minute IPA

Hi guys,

Managed to blag myself a Valentine's Day brew session - still not too sure how... With both the missus and the little prince round the in-laws, it was time to crack on. My aim of four brews in February is looking unlikely, got two done now but not sure if I'll find the time for the other two! How long can you keep malt in an uninsulated shed in -5 degrees?!

Recipe:
Batch size = 30 Litres (ish, still haven't got round to measuring fermenter contents)

Pale malt = 7.15kg
Torrefied wheat = 0.25kg
Amarillo = 9g 60mins
Chinook = 9g 60mins
Amarillo = 11g 30mins
Chinook = 11g 30mins
Cascade = 11g 30mins
Amarillo = 11g 25mins
Chinook = 11g 25mins
Cascade = 11g 25mins
Amarillo = 11g 20mins
Chinook = 11g 20mins
Cascade = 11g 20mins
Amarillo = 11g 15mins
Chinook = 11g 15mins
Cascade = 11g 15mins
Irish Moss = 5g 15mins
Amarillo = 11g 10mins
Chinook = 11g 10mins
Cascade = 11g 10mins
Amarillo = 11g 5mins
Chinook = 11g 5mins
Cascade = 11g 5mins
Amarillo = 25g 80 degree steep for 30mins
Chinook = 25g 80 degree steep for 30mins
Cascade = 34g 80 degree steep for 30mins

Yeast is MJ West Coast

This was Greg Hughes' recipe with the addition of torrefied wheat and the hop bomb steep at the end.

Pretty happy with how the brew day went, had Liverpool v Villa on and a beer (or two) in hand. Target SG was 1.057, hit 1.055. Went back to batch sparging on this one, attempted fly sparging the last brew however I was a little under volume on batch size. Mashed at 65, after an hour was 64.7. Increased evaporation rate from 15% to 25%, which I think included some allowance for the crazy amount of hops in this brew.

One major catastrophe was avoided though, moved an old fence panel to act as a windbreak and inadvertantly the extension cable to the shed fell into the propane burner. Didn't notice right away, but investigated when I smelt the burning! Thankfully disaster was averted!!!

This brew is fermenting away in the shed in tropical -5 Birmingham. Went for a fish tank heater in a crate of water due to having a King Keg with AG#06 in carbing in the keezer at 18 degrees target, reading 17.6 degrees at present.

Man that hop schedule is intense, certainly no time to rest during the boil!

Cheers

I was wondering about that too. What's the thinking behind adding hops at five-minute intervals?

not too sure about the reasoning, its straight out of Greg Hughes' book - don't Dogfish Head add hops every minute of their 60 minute IPA?

Recipe looks great, I have seen it in his book but never went ahead. Do you plan to dry hop?

Will wait and see what its like after fermentation Rhodesy, it had quite a few in the 80 degree steep so might be OK without it

Let me know as I much I love to dry hop I plan to experiment overloading my 80c additions with no dry hop. I will likely split a batch and do this but interested all the same.

I like the label. Is LabBrau the name of your brewery?
