AG#18 - 366 Squadron APA

Post by Monkeybrew » Mon Feb 22, 2016 12:34 pm

I finally got around to brewing an AG beer with plenty of hops in on Saturday morning. Not really sure why it has taken me so long, but I just suppose I have been enjoying brewing mainly English style brews up until now.

I've got a couple more planned this year in the shape of an American Amarillo Amber and also an American El Dorado Brown ale........

The brewday started early and I was in my brewshed at 06:15. I now set my HLT to come on with a timer, so it was nice and hot and ready to go. After a bit of faffing around and moving some bits out of my shed, the mash was all doughed in and started at 06:45. The rest of the brewday went quite well and I was all done by lunchtime, with just the clean up to do later.

I popped in to see Kyle_T the week before, and had a beer, chat, a look at his BM in action and also came away with some Wibblers Brewery Yeast, so I grew this up a bit in the week and decided use it in my APA.

I ended up with 23.5L in the FV @1.050, instead of a planned 23L @1.048, so it was good to see that my efficiency has gone up a few percent.

The yeast was pitched after lunch and fermentation was well under way within 24 hours and now seems even more vigorous today, with the krausen touching the inside of the lid on my FV.

:)

This brew is now down to 1.012 and has been stable for a fews days, but still looks quite cloudy. Anyway, had another taste last night and it needs just a bit more hoppiness for me, so without much thought I added the remaining Equinox pellets (46g) that were left over from the brewday.

They will only be in for 3 days, as I'm now crash cooling and plan to rack on Thursday, before bottling at the weekend.

Cheers

Got this all bottled up last night, and now going to give it 2 weeks indoors before transferring to a cool garage.

What was it tasting like, Monkey? Good enough to drink with nothing on, or in need of some TLC...Tender Loving Conditioning?

At bottling it was tasting ok-ish, but I tried a room temperature bottle after 1 week in the warm and even though it wasn't very clear, it was tasting pretty good already.

A nice malty background but with a nice grapefruit bitter finish :)

I must try that Wibblers yeast some time. Can you still get is posted by the brewery? There's no yeast on the website right now.
