Black IPA v2

Post by Scott-westy » Sat Feb 27, 2016 10:54 am

This is my first forum brewday post and sort of a use up recipe, so I know it won't be strictly true to guidelines but I don't care if it tastes good.

I steeped the carafa III and choc malt last night and mashed in as normal the MO and rye this morning at 67. The steep will get added at 15 mins left.

The remainder of the recipe is pretty standard American IPA territory. First time trying summit hops, I scored 500g pellets for about 8 quid late last year off a group buy along with same amount of Columbus and I looking forward to seeing how they come over.

More pics as brewday progresses!

One thing, do you think that crush looks too coarse? I ordered a sack of crisp from MM but it looks a bit coarse?

Hops measured out, Chinook, citra and summit. They stink!

Pre boil is 1043, I was expecting 1048. I think the crush is wrong. PH fine.

OG 1050, so I think the cold steep and crush has definitely affected the efficiency. 1050 will do however. US05 rehydrated and pitched and 20L now sat in the brewfridge at 18c. Good brewday.

1016 after 8 days, a bit sluggish. So upped the temp to 19 and chucked the cascade leaf in which often gets it moving again. Trial jar is v promising, but I think next time I wouldn't add any choc malt. Otherwise nice clean beer at the minute but definitely needs a big dry hop to balance the aroma. Citra pellets going in later in the week.

Do you do full volume biab ? I've just got myself a buffalo induction hob and 50l ss brewtech kettle so I can do biab batches indoors instead of my 3 vessel in the garage

Yep. 42L kettle, no bother.

This is the rig. Nice and simple but very effective.

What do you use to filter hops ? I've got pretty much the same thing with the false bottom but I'm thinking il end up with a lot of pellet hob leftovers in the fermenter

Well I tend to use hop bags if using leaf but mainly I use pellets, whirlpool with a big spoon and then the trub dam filters a decent portion out. I genuinely don't care what ends up in the FV and have never noticed any ill effect in the beer. I always cold crash at about 2 deg for 2-3 days prior to bottling/kegging by the way which drops everything out anyway. You can worry too much about this issue I think.

Yeh mg only issue is I have a plate chiller + pump, I'm hoping a whirlpool will be enough to stop them getting clogged

ah right I see.

I have previously added pellets to nylon bags in the boil. This may work for you.

Annoyingly been stuck at 1016 for the last 4 days. Maybe my mash was off slightly. No matter, it's done. So crashing now before the keg.

Kegged, carbed and I gotta say tastes awesome. Definitely one of my favourite styles.
