ColAmMo

Post by AdrianTrace » Sun Feb 28, 2016 12:42 pm

Decided to have a Sunday morning brewtime, after a bacon sarnie to get going. Todays recipe, aiming for around 14 litres at 1.043:

1.5Kg extra light DME - added to the full boil
150g Caramalt 30 EBC
150g Light Caramalt
150g Medium Caramalt
20g Black malt

60 Mins boil

Hops: Columbus 2014 16%AA Pellet/Amarillo 2014 10%AA Pellet/ Mosaic 2015 11.8%AA Leaf
15 mins 10g/10g/10g (plus 1/3 Whirlfloc)
75*C steep 10g/20g/20g
Dry Hop 30g/30g/30g (Planned)

Yeast - 175ml of light parts of the GV12 yeast cake from last week's Post-Peak Bitter (viewtopic.php?f=24&t=75007)

No pictures this week, but the boil is done and the hops are steeping. The 2015 Mosaic leaf is a lovely sticky lump - pulling it apart left my hands with a nice tropical fruit smell on them :D

Edit: 15L at 1.040 in the FV.

Vigourous fermentation is dying down, so the planned 90g of dry hops (30/30/30) have gone in, contained in a medium sized voile bag.

Not yet - Bottled a week ago, so I should really put them out into the cold... Might have an early test this weekend.

The smell was great, so I'm looking forward to giving it a go.

I really like this one.

The smell and the initial flavour is like a Fruit Salad. No, not that sort.

This sort:

Then it falls away into a nice malty lingering bitter flavour, so when you take the next sip, the Fruit Salad flavour hits again.

Just writing it down it sounds like a bad combo: sweets & beer? But somehow it works. It probably helps that I like Fruit Salads

Great hops. A lot of caramalt, that worked out OK?

It seems to be fine - I had been keeping to around 10-15%, and the beers were coming out slightly lacking in body for our taste. But then, I'm using DME, and I understand that 1.5kg DME is roughly equivalent to 2.5Kg of grain with a 75% efficiency, so although it looks like 25% caramalt, for an equivalent all grain recipe it would be more like 15%.

I also use the terms caramalt and crystal malt interchangeably... I hope that's ok?

Whatever works is OK! And 15% isn't ridiculous, just higher than I tend to go.

OK - new data on ColAmMo -

I have just set up for an Amarillo single hop, and found that it's an unopened pack... and I only have one pack  I guess it wasn't Amarillo in ColAmMo  But now I don't know what it was... Cascade or Summit are most likely. I just wish I could remember which bag of hops was around 60g light a couple of months back :D
