Bell's two hearted (ish)

Brewed up another version of this one, which is becoming my staple pale ale. A little lighter the ABV than the "real" clone, but very drinkable:

Having recently brewed a few pales with higher chloride and moderate SO4, I decided to swing the other way with this one and go for something approaching Randy Mosher's ideal pale, with very low Chloride (27 ppm - my tap water base) and quite a good slug of SO4 (250 ish with gypsum and epsom salts). It'll be interesting to contrast this with a couple I've got condition with ~100ppm Cl and 150 SO4.

pumping over - this is working really well now:

tried 1/4 tab of koppakleer instead of protafloc for this one, just to give it a try. Got a very nice cold break and the clearest wort in a while - and got within a point of the 1.052 target. PItched a 1.5l starter of WLP090 which is definitely my new favourite APA yeast.

Looking forward to this one - as ever :)

I do a version of this too, and it's fantastic. Centennial is such a wonder hop.

Tell me about it - Centennial is my favourite hop by far at the moment, and I don't seem to be getting sick of it either :) Brew this (or similar) a lot as well - just a little lower ABV than the original so I can drink more of it 8)

Wow that looks like a very compact and efficient setup Matt, and what a lovely clear wort, have you a thread or post detailing building up your setup at all?

Hi mate I have just rebuilt this system, and done a couple of debug brews before deciding on a few finishing touches (wire routing etc). I do plan to write something up soon!

Nice setup and that wort is super clear. That Buffalo Induction Hob has caught my eye recently, as has the SS Brew Kettle.

I'm looking at options that will allow me to take my brewing out into the garage or onto the patio during better weather, and an induction hob appeals more than a propane burner. How are you finding the Buffalo's Power output and ability to maintain a decent rolling boil?

I also notice it's on offer at Nisbets.co.uk at the moment at £99 plus VAT, if anyone is interested.

Yep I picked mine up when they were the same deal last year. Best move I ever made - I used to have a big gas burner and a 50l pot, running off bottled gas. It was expensive, noisy and hot - and swapping the gas bottles was a pain. No problems boiling on the 10g SS pot - I've done 32l boils in 2C ambient and get a nice rolling boil. In the US they manage 5 gallon batches on 1800W induction (they are limited by their 110V power supply) - they are using tricks like wrapping the pot in insulation etc but I haven't needed to do any of that. The great thing about induction is that it is as controllable as gas, with all of the other benefits that electric brings. I brew in the shed on the end of a thick extension cable.

Damn, I wish you'd have said it's a waste of money! It's got my Credit Card finger twitching now and I've just tested my current 19l Brew Kettle and it's non magnetic, which would mean...and that Brewtech kettle is so shiny too..doh!

Brewbuilder are doing pots now that they say are induction compatible - they look pretty good and the price is very decent. One thing that really drew me to the SS kettle was the height/width ratio. Most pots are pretty wide, but the SS is only 35cm for the 10 gallon (37.5 l), which is pretty much perfect for the Buffalo. The smallest BB pot is 33l and also 35cm wide - and only £67 - although I don't think you get a tap for that.

My Buffalo 40l boiler just gave up (not a cutting out issue). If I can't get it fixed I'm tempted by the buffalo induction and SS pot method

You won't regret it :) (I hope!)

Here's a boil pic. All my brews so far have been in the shed at < 10C, mostly less than 5C ambient with no issues at all. I boil off about 4 litres an hour which is decent enough I think - although of course there is always scope to insulate if you feel the need.

How long does it take the induction hob to get that sort of volume up to a boil?
