1st BIAB - lone wolf

Been a kit and extract brewer for a few years. Did my first BIAB the other day using slovenian hops from the geterbrewed giveaway, pale malt .

recipe:
1.9kg weyerman pale malt
100g carahell
9 litres ish length

Styrian Wolf pellets single hop.
8g at 60 mins
8g at 15 mins
32g at flame out.

all brewed in a 14 litres alu. stock pot. which is a pain to clean and I realize a bit small!

Water at 74 and added grains
68C
left it for a long time. for over two hours - accidental.
used water from kettle mixed with cold to sparge.

runnings from the pot were 1046
from sparge were 1020.

1030OG at 43C pre boil. that is 1036 adjusted.
ended up with about 9 litres post boil and 1048-9 OG.
was megahoppy the sample!

by today this was down to 1009. I will give a few more days then bottle.

about the lightest sample i have ever taken!

Sounds good and seems like it all went ok, did you lose track of time with the mash? and what yeast are you using?

Congratulations, keep us posted. i've never used those malts or hops! What was the yeast?

mistimed the whole brew ... and no access to the kitchen for an hour.

Yeast is Nottingham. Half a packet. rehydrated before pitching.

been in the brew fridge at 18C since brew. was impatient and pitched while it was still at 26, but it was at down at 19 three hours later.

How did you find the Wolf? I used them for the first time a couple of brews back - not overly sure about the taste - seems quite harsh at the moment. I was hoping it would mellow but has been in the bottle a couple of months and the taste is still there.

Haven't bottled yet so difficult to say. This has been cold crashing the last two days with the aim of bottling this weekend.

Judge it better when bottled and carbonatwd

Be interested to see what you think mate. It could just be I overdid it, or, more likely, my vindaloo/phall abused tastebuds are to blame!!

Bottles this yesterday but I think I have messed this one up.

There is a weird flavour to it that I put down to yeast or being young. Not so sure it is either... It has a weird buttery, popcorn taste.. Which looking up seems to be diacetyl?

I don't know if that will bottle condition or if I will end up dumping the lot

Looking at my notes I was in a rush when I made it... And think I created a perfect condition for the fault..
I forgot to aerate.
I pitched just half a pack of Nottingham into the 9 litres.
I pitched at what I thought was 24c but stc pribe measured as 26.7c.

It was at 18 a few hours later in the brew fridge. Or rather the probe was at that temp yaped to the side. I guess the wort could still have been warmer.

Am I doomed? Or will time heal this?

And lesson learnt for me.

put one in the fridge and tasted the other night.

this is clearing and tasting much better. I think time will heal this one. nicely bitter and refreshingly hoppy. Still a hint of the buttery flavour, but much, much reduced. I finished the bottle quickly enough !
