Munich Red Ale

Post by Hanglow » Mon May 02, 2016 10:30 am

Brewing this today, I'm also chucking in a bit of Roasted Barley to aid with any redness at sparge time
Image

Will add pictures in due course :) Hoping for a strongly hoppy beer with an assertive malty body from the munich

The cascades are bushel of hops ones for the boil, styrian ones for the dry hop

Also hoping the filter will work well with the mix of leaf and pellets

I love hoppy bitter reds, but I've never used Munich as the base malt. Keep us posted.

Was a bit under my pre boil gravity, although i have more volume. Decided to add 250g of DME that i had lying around to compensate a bit.

Efficiency was crap, I got 1.050. I think it was the first mash, the gravity of it was low but the gravity of the sparge was fine.

Tasted good enough at least :)

First runnings nice and clear

No, more brown  Might have needed a bit more roast barley perhaps

Excellent pictures there, Hanglow. I can almost smell the barley. Hope it turns out well.

Like the look of that one. Quite a bit of hops. Must have soaked up a lot of wort. I bought 10 Kg of Munich (Best Malz) recently. Some of which I am planning to use in another attempt to replicate Devanha XXX. Trying to increase the maltiness. May also try a Munich only brew. Do you think using Munich affected your efficiency?

I assume so. Should probably have tried a longer mash perhaps.

One other thing I noticed was there were quite a few bits of barley stalks in with the grain, I've not seen that before with british malts.

Bottled today, FG was 1.014. Which is fairly low attenuation for us05,

It's tasting very green/hop dominated at the moment as you might expect. Now the wait

Tried this today, got some chill haze in the fridge though. In the light it is a reddish brown,

Floral aroma from the dryhop, some grapefruityness in the flavour. Very well bodied and well carbed, good bitterness in the middle that dies off to dryness on the finish

Rather pleased with this :)

Looks great. Would you say the Munich has contributed to the body of the beer? I made a beer recently with Munich as the base malt and oats, but efficiency was down, so came in at a fairly low OG. It is currently being dry hopped, but am hoping for a beer with better body than the previous low OG brews I have made.

I think so yeah, although that is the only mainly munich beer I've done, apart from a 50/50 beer I did ages with MO and that was british munich

Has a good malt flavour too, very different from british malts
