Hiatus IPA (AKA Leedsbrew's return) + some PICS
Hiatus IPA (AKA Leedsbrew's return) + some PICS
Now then....................been a while. Infact I recon a fair few of you won't know who I am! lol
I've been out in the cold for about 2 years, but I've got the passion back again recently. I broke out the mash tun yesterday to brew for the Northern Craft Brewers competition in August.
Rules: English IPA using only UK or European hops. Any malts and yeast
So with that in mind I came up with the following recipe:
Hiatus IPA
Final Volume: 23 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.054
Final Gravity: 1.014
Alcohol Content: 5.3% ABV
Mash Efficiency: 85%
Bitterness: 42IBU
Colour: 8 SRM
Achilles IPA
Fermentables
Ingredient Amount % MCU When
UK Pale Ale Malt 87%
Belgian Cara Vienna Malt 6%
Belgian Biscuit Malt 5%
UK Wheat Malt 2%
Hops
Variety Alpha Amount IBU Form When
German Magnum 13% AA, 30g 36.5 IBUs, Loose Whole Hops First Wort Hopped
UK Keyworth M 4.5% AA, 50g, 5.4 IBUs, Loose Whole Hops 10 mins from end
German Mandarina Bavaria 7.5% 50g, Loose Whole Hops At turn off
UK Keyworth M 4.5% AA, 50g, Loose Whole Hops 4 day dry hop
Yeast
S04
The grain bill is a variation of a recipe I've done before that came out really well in a US IPA called Achilles. viewtopic.php?f=24&t=48877&hilit=achilles
It looked the business in the glass
Unfortunately, due to my hiatus, grain stocks were low and I was out of Amber and CaraMunich II. Up stepped biscuit and cara vienna. the colour should be about the same, and I'm hoping that the biscuit will add a similar dryness as amber malt, and similarly the caraVienna should add a sweetness akin to CaraMunich.
Considering I've been out of the game for so long I was surprised at how uneventful the whole session was. Managed to hit all the numbers and volumes.
I had to pop out and see a man about an allotment, after a 2 hour mash my little coolbox mash tun had kept the temp almost perfectly.
Brimmed it!
Got a really good break
Came out clear as a bell
Hit 23L all but bang on!
so this is happily chugging away with S04. Once fermentation has died down I'll give it its 4 days of dry hops, rack and then bottle ready for the comp!
Good to be back in the saddle!
cheers
LB

Good to see you back brewing again. What was the reason for the big break? Just interested in what are the most common impacts on hobbies/brewing.

Re: Hiatus IPA (AKA Leedsbrew's return) + some PICS
ey up chief. Well its fermented out to 10.10 so ended up being 5.5%. Quite low end for abv but I'm the one who has to drink the rest of the batch
Colour and flavor, spot on for where I wanted them. The Keyworth is coming through as very English. not too sure what the Mandarina has brought to the party yet. I'm racking it to secondary tonight and dry hoping.
You recipe looks good. smooth enough brewday?
Re: Hiatus IPA (AKA Leedsbrew's return) + some PICS
I've never had key worth, or if I have, I've not know! Looking forward to trying yours.
Everything went smooth except the timer on the HTL kicked in late, but I can live with that.
