As the name suggests a Styrian fest will take place at the V1 brewery tomorrow, courtesy of recipes from M Ollosson and his book 'Real Ales for the home brewer'

Round 1...sometime too early for a Sunday

Market Best Bitter...46 ltr batch

In the tun: Mash at 65 deg c for 90 min

Marris otter pale malt 9.22kg
Crystal Malt 500g

In the copper: Boil time 90 min

Styrian Goldings (3%AA) 216g 90 min
Styrian Goldings 78g last 10 min
Whirlfloc tablet last 15 min

Yeast S04

OG 1040, FG 1009, IBU 38, ABV 4%

I've added 50% more aroma hops at last 15 min from original recipe and I've cut the boil time from 2hrs to 90 min

Round 2...

Styrian Stunner....46ltr batch

In the tun: Mash at 65 deg c for 90 min

Marris Otter pale malt 9.78kg

In the copper: Boil time 90 min

Styrian Goldings (3%AA) 119g 90 min
Styrian Goldings 56g last 15 min
Whirlfloc tablet last 10 min

Yeast S04

OG 1040, FG 1009, IBU 21, ABV 4.1%

I've added 100% more aroma hops last 15 min and I've cut the boil time from 2hrs to 90 min

Not sure why the ABV's are different for the 2 recipe's but that's what the book says

Vossy, have you tried the Premium Pale recipe from Marc O's book? The recipe is very interesting in as much as it has very close to double the bittering and late hop additions of Styrian Stunner.
I find SS bitter enough as it is, and like you I usually add extra late hops anyway. Just wondered if anyone had tried the Premium Pale and whether it's OTT or not.

Good luck with the double brew day. :)

Cheers chaps 8)

Wobbler, yep I've done the premium pale and I was thiiiiisss close to doing it again tomorrow.
The standard 21 IBU SS lacks a bit in the bitterness levels for me, the premium pale is just right, but Mrs V1 can't cope with all those IBU's.

Premium Pale is IMO BETTER/EQUAL to Styrian Stunner as it's written in the book, but if you adjust the IBU of the Stunner to match, then the SS wins hands down IMO. I do prefer Styrians to EKG and these 2 recipes give you a very good idea of how good single varietal brews can be 8)
MO's IPA using just Cascade is a force to be reckoned with and if I was pushed I'd say it's as good as the SS
Try the IPA....you'll see what I mean

There's a link to the PP...I'll find it and edit it in here

It's a very boring link though

That's all I needed to give me the push to trying the Premium Pale. :)

Doesn't that beer then become Premium Pale, but with less aroma? In my copy of the book, both recipes use Styrian hops.

I'll certainly give the IPA a go. Is that the one on page 77? I'm a fan of Cascade anyhow, so I'm sure I'll love it.

I've recently started experimenting with single hop pale ales, so far Styrians has been my favourite. Next going to try Willamette and then Amarillo. Wasn't too keen on the H. Hersbrucker, and haven't tasted the Saaz brew yet.
Thanks for the link.

Then your books different to mine
Premium Pale page 128 uses Goldings, Styrian Stunner page 148 uses Styrians.

EDIT

Apologies Wobbler...I've just flicked through the book and there are 2 premium pales....Premium Pale and Johns Premium Pale...I was refering to the latter above..incorrectly

Yep that's the IPA, a fine drink it was too 8)

Yep, wont take too long at 200+g's per batch

No problem, we certainly had our wires crossed though. Now you see why I connected the Premium Pale recipe with Styrian Stunner, i.e. same recipe but with almost double the hops. I can imagine that beer is really in yer face.

The last batch of Stunner I made followed the original recipe (5gal), but then added 30g of Styrians as steeping hops at 80°C, then 15g Styrians dry hop in secondary. Maybe that added to the perceived bitterness. It's a mighty fine brew though. I might try the Stunner recipe without the late and dry hops and up the bittering hops to 42, ala John's PP.

EB, do you think you'll get an answer? The V1 brewery should be in full swing by now! 8)

Happy brewday V.

Wasn't one of his last posts last night (early morning) something about drinking lots of Hefe which he thought couldn't contain much alcohol due to the rate it was being consumed
