Challenger brew

Post by retourrbx » Sun Oct 07, 2007 8:50 pm

4.5kg pale malt
0.5 kg torrified wheat
35g challenger 60 mins
15g challenger 15 mins
30g challenger steeped for an hour while cooling once under 80'C
30g dry hop in secondary

Some changes I made to my brewday...

1. used copper manifold in mash tun

2. sorted out batch sparge volumes

3. used whirlfloc tablet

It went rather well, got 25L at 1.040 so I need to look again at the volumes, only wanted 23 L. Efficiency seemed to be up on last time when I got 18L at 1.042 with 4.7kg pale

Very impressed with Whirfloc - clarity will be mine... oh yes...

Many thanks to Barley Bottom for the ingredients - reccomended

Those Challengers make a damn fine brew.

fingers crossed - the last batch I made went down the drain due to infection

I make that 72% efficiency - is that about right for a batch sparge?

After a week and the gravity is 1.006 - never had it go that low before... is it alright?

Started at 1.040 - looking to be 4.4% abv

Good stuff - now to dry hop with some more challenger - is 30g alright do you think?

Also what are those things flying across your avatar?

What yeast did you use? I've seen US-05 go that low no probs.
