I blew up the brewery yesterday.

Had a good one? Tell us about it here - and don't forget - we like pictures!

I blew up the brewery yesterday.

Well that's possibly overstating the case a little, but I certainly did some damage.

I heated the HLT as normal, then lost a few litres by accident. No real probem - I usually heat up 30l but don't need it all. I filled the MT as usual and started mixingg in the goods. Then the lights went out, leaving a red glow and a slight creaking sound. Idiot! The lost litres now meant the elements in the HLT were now uncovered and had burnt out, taking the 60A main house trip with it.

This left me: (a) releaved the electrical safety features work, (b) releaved that I'd replaced the old plastic HLT with stainless steel, (c) in a certain amount of trouble with the family since they'd lost computer files when the power went off and (d) annoyed i'd burnt out 2 good quality kettle elements.

No real problem since I can still heat water with the boiler, but grrr...

The brew? a pretty standard bitter:

50l,
8kg MO
1kg wheat malt
600g crystal
60g Fuggles 90min
60g EKG 90min
40g EKG 10min
split into 2 fermenting bins with SA4 in one and SA5 in the other.

Since Beersmith requires a name for a brew, in line with my mood and the current serious situation, I called it "F*** Covid". I think you'll all understand.

Happy brewing.
SR.
