Brewed this four days ago. Took it from the Dave Line Big Book of Brewing.
Bit of a spur of the moment decision to brew. Mad rush to get everything prepped. Grain weighed and crushed, liquor
additions weighed out etc.
Disaster!!! I was doing the second sparge and forgot to turn off the drain tap on the mashtun whilst pouring in the sparge water.
I noticed it as I was filling the jug from the HLT and jumped back to turn it off, but left the HLT tap running!!! Boiled two
kettles of water to try and replace the lost liquor.
Not only that, but my HLT stopped heating at some point so the sparge water was only about 40C. My recirculating mashtun brought it back up to temp fairly quickly though.
I almost hit 32L in the kettle after the second sparge, so not too far off what I normally aim for. Efficiency from the mash is very high,
but that is because it includes the sugar addition which I added to some wort in a pan to dissolve it before adding back to the
copper.
To cap it all I had ran out of Protafloc tabs! Might be a bit murky this brew!
Was meant to be a 1.040 brew @ 85% efficiency, but the extra efficiency from the sugar and possibly the Minch malt gave me 1.042 OG instead. Left it at that rather than liquoring back.
The 16g of EKG at flameout was just to use up the last of the pack. Not part of Dave's recipe.
Took a gravity reading today and it has gone down to 1.010, so not far off predicted FG. Using Gervin yeast to ferment.
